This week is all about learning things. Sure, there’s some talk of movies, and of the health benefits of the podcast. But we mostly learn things, about William, about Tony. About life. Join us, won’t you? Enjoy!

Hey, I’ve listened to every episode! I just fall behind from time to time.

As for audio volumes – still quieter than the intro but you’re both at similar levels to one another. It may be worth trying some sort of normalisation of the audio after you add the intro / outro. There used to be a good piece of software called levelator or something similar. If I remember correctly you just drag and drop the file and it balances the segments.

Wow, Tony, great story about the effect of watching Nanette and the aftermath.

I think that feeling like “the bad guy” is unfortunately one of the common things that happens after these types of confrontations (and is not what we are led to expect about how it will feel)–because this behavior is the norm, and people who challenge the norm are going to get the response of “whatever”-eye-roll (“What’s the matter with him/her?”). That was one of the purposes of consciousness-raising/support groups back in the day (as the kids say)–to give people another social group outside of the “norm” so that there’s a place one doesn’t feel like the bad guy.

  3. Beth says:

I’ve listened to every episode, but I also get behind from time to time.

In your gym scenario, your hypothetical woman has at least one more choice: she can say something about the behavior herself. Though she’ll probably be labeled an oversensitive jerk which will make the situation as awkward, if not more awkward than being ogled/catcalled in the first place.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Yep. Then you get labeled “the bitch.”

Guys not calling out other guys on their sexism is a problem. We all think we do… but there are so many things we let slide, sometimes without even noticing.

  4. Mark says:

Episodes Listened to: I’ve listened to most episodes. If I can ever find the time and the episodes I’ve missed; I plan/hope to go back to listen to those as well.

Local Gaming Scene: ICON has been held in Cedar Rapids for a good number of years now. AnimeIowa used to be in Coralville but has moved back to Des Moines again as of this year. You also left out Tempest Games, which is the Cedar Rapids game store where Dav-of-Id runs some of the Playing in Public events.

Krull: I don’t have good memories of it but I’ve also not seen it since high school.

Tornados: When I was younger, I used to live in Marshalltown which also got hit pretty hard a recent tornado. From what I understand Taylor’s survived with only minor damage which pleases me.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Haven’t seen it, didn’t notice anything in the trailer that makes me want to see it.

Nanette: I’ve watched it. I went in knowing nothing about her, having only heard that it was powerful/important. It’s amazing but brutal.

Standing up for others: Well done, Tony.

Space Opera“: A subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking. Set mainly or entirely in outer space, it usually involves conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, futuristic weapons, and other sophisticated technology.”

Camp & “Knowing Look: I had no clue that William had a knowing look on his face until you mentioned it Tony. So maybe the person to blame here wasn’t William…
