Episode 615 : Year End Sharknado

YouTube link here. So holidays!

This week, we talk a surprising amount about stripping, but nothing really resolves, it all just meanders until it’s time to be done. Enjoy!

Paul Giamatti stars in “A Christmas Carol” with:

    Ben Whishaw as Bob Cratchit
    Saoirse Ronan as Mrs. Cratchit
Milo Parker (of The Durrells in Crofu) as Tiny Tim (though maybe he’s now too old?)
Thaddea Graham (of The Irregulars) as The Ghost of Christmas Past
Gwendolyn Christie as The Ghost of Christmas Present (because that is brilliant!)
Michelle Gomez as The Ghost of Christmas Future
Peter Capaldi as Marley (and to reunite with Michelle Gomez)
    Hayley Atwell as Scrooge’s Sister
    Tom Hiddleston as Scrooge’s Nephew
Lisa Dillon (of Cranford) as his (the nephew’s) wife
    Jim Broadbent as Fezziwig
Ella Purnell (of Miss Peregrine) as Scrooge’s lost love
Daniel Radcliffe as the young Scrooge

I did finish H:FW that week finally. I spent a lot of time just randomly hunting and upgrading gear. But yeah, I really enjoyed that.

I’ve had a lot of variations on the imbalance of power conversation you were having in regard to stripping. For example, my boyfriend in college said to me that I (or any woman) could approach any man and ask him to have sex with me and the man would welcome the invitation, whereas if he did this to any woman and he would be, at the very least, rebuked. And this, of course, was SO UNFAIR (to him, and all men). And no amount of explanation along the lines of–well, because women are defined as having no identity but sex, whereas men have identity as fully 3-dimensional beings–got across.

Better experience with a former student of mine in a facebook exchange which began becuse I had complained about the representation of a female character in a comic book. He asked why it was any different for men, as men are also physically distorted in their representations in comic books, and I said, because the distortions of male characters (which I also think is detrimental to men) distorts them to make them look physically powerful, whereas the distortions around female characters are generally not (unless one were going to use enormous breasts as weapons?). He appreciated that answer. (Note, I think comic representations have gotten somewhat better.)

Glass Onion – I enjoyed it. I think it was funnier than the original, though I think the plot of Knives Out was better. (Unless, you are Ben Shapiro, apparently. I have to admit that I find his outrage over various pop culture stuff pretty funny.)

Also saw “Klaus,” “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” and “Paddington.” Loved all of those. For some reason, had seen Paddington 2 but not the first. I think I liked the first one better, though Hugh Grant was a great villain!

Best present–got a big bag to organize all my knitting stuff from my son. One feature I really appreciate is that it has grommets running close to the top that you can keep a ball of yarn for your most recent project at the top of the bag and feed the yarn out through the grommeted hole so that it doesn’t keep getting tangled or falling on the floor (and in my house–getting covered in dog hair).
