DERECHO… not herecho, which is what I think I said. *sigh* 🙄

I genuinely heard “Horatio,” and immediately thought of “Horatio Hornblower,” then thought I’d make some sort of Hamlet joke. But by the time my brain formed all that, we’d switched topics. 🙂

  2. jas says:

    Tony,

Can you say more about why the study on masks/gaiters doesn’t disqualify gaiters? I watched this video of the researcher explaining the study and based on that have been telling people not to wear gaiters, but I know several people who would prefer to wear them so it would be nice to find out that I’m misinterpreting the study.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Well, all my info was secondhand, so I have no sources, and may have been quite wrong.

To that end, I’m going to be ordering some regular masks…

It is amazing how many variety shows there used to be. The ones I remember us watching as a family were The Ed Sullivan Show, The Jackie Gleason Show, The Carol Burnett Show, and The Smothers Brothers.

The first adult show I watched that wasn’t a variety show was Perry Mason. Our extended family was very into it. I remember going to my grandmother’s house to watch it and often some of my Uncles and their families would be there too.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Oh! Perry Mason! I did used to watch a lot of that, on my own, even as a child.

It was on every weeekday at noon, on our local independent TV channel. For, like, 20-30 years.

The first show I watched on my own and then got my parents interested in was Star Trek. And I remember the first episodes I watched ’cause they were very thematically similar: The Menagerie and Shore Leave.

There was something very comforting about Perry Mason.

    • William says:

I mentioned Adam-12 and Emergency! as possible answers to the question, but I’d forgotten that Adam-12 was a spinoff of Dragnet, and Emergency! was a spinoff to Adam-12. All of these shows were created by Jack Webb.

Wiki jogged my memory… I recall the Emergency! guys being in at least one episode of Adam-12. I don’t know if the Adam-12 guys were ever in Dragnet, but they must have been, and I kind of remember that they were, but I’m not sure. In any case, I do recall, now, knowing as a kid that these shows were all taking place in the same reality, so to speak. The Webb-iverse, I guess!

I particularly looked forward to Emergency!, and had a number of toy ambulances/EMT vehicles when I was little.

      • William says:

Er… I should point out that most of the episodes of both Dragnet and Adam-12 that I can remember, I probably watched them in syndication while Emergency! was still airing. But I’ve always remembered watching Dragnet for a while before Adam-12, and Adam-12 for a while before Emergency!… which makes me wonder if the episodes of these shows that I can remember, I watched them *all* in syndication… hmm…

        Memory is a weird thing.

I guess I’ve been in a lot of storms. Hurricanes were mostly exciting when I was a kid ’cause I didn’t realize the danger. A couple of times, relatives had to stay over because their houses were flooded or they lost power, and that always seemed like a fun thing. I remember being without power once and my Dad making breakfast in the fireplace.

Went through a loss of power up here in Massachusetts when I was living in a house with a bunch of other people, including a guy who had just gotten divorced and happened to have his 9-year-old son staying with him. I remember that because we stayed up playing monopoly be candlelight.

Was in school during the blizzard of ’78 and mostly remember writing out all my papers by hand, and also that it was very, very quiet until people started venturing out on skis and sleds and stuff. But still no machinery noises, just people and animal noises.

  5. Azuretalon says:

My first grown-up show as a kid… I have good memories of watching Star Trek: The Next Generation from episode one with my dad every week. Besides that, I think that I would think Twilight Zone or The Simpsons (Assuming that counts)

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

TNG, along with the Cosby Show, are the first shows I think of when I think of family television. Both were Thursday nights, and the whole family would get together to watch them.

I actually *hated* The Simpsons when it first came out. Same way I hated Married With Children. I thought they were both shows about families that hated each other and tried to ruin each others’ lives, and I didn’t find that funny.

  6. Mark says:

Bluetooth connection “fun”: The stereo in Michelle’s car has a spot in the settings where you can tell it how to prioritize the various devices that have connected to it in the past. Maybe your car does too?

How am I? About like you’d expect from somebody responding to faceless (as I listen, not watch) voices from the Internet….

Derecho: Yup, that was fucked. I think it took like 2 weeks to get power back to our house and I think like 3-4 days until we had cell service back in our neighborhood. With that said, we got very, very lucky. We lost 1.5 trees, 1 window, and got a dent in the gutter on our garage. Heck after a few days, my brother-in-law was even able to lend us a generator so we could power my wife’s CPAP and the window A/C we use for our bedroom.

Tony’s Kitchen…. It sounded like the Producer responded that “your butt” when Tony asked what was going on in his kitchen, to which Tony then commented that he noticed that cosmic rays were bathing the kitchen space. So…. Tony’s butt must regularly bath the kitchen with cosmic rays even when he’s physically in another room? Just how powerful is your butt Tony?

Derecho, continued: Yeah, Cedar Rapids lost 65% of its trees and even now, 8 months later, there are still plenty of houses waiting on repairs (roofs, siding, etc.). It look several weeks (months?) for the massive piles of trees along many of the streets to be cleared away so you could see to safely cross the street, turn, etc. Also, I can totally believe that the derecho did more damage than the flood or at least more widespread damage. As bad as the ’08 flood was, it was relatively localized to areas around the river; while as near as I can tell, the derecho hit the entire city of Cedar Rapids.

Humanity is trash; but on the bright side, we did vote out the tangerine man.

Doom Patrol: We don’t subscribe to HBO; so we haven’t seen it, but I’ve seen some clips that makes me want to watch it.

Altered Carbon: Meh, watched a single episode but it failed to catch my interest.

Shitty Time Travel: Tony, since it sounds like you might also enjoy a good time travel story, do you have any you’d recommend?

Lovecraft Country: I’ve heard a lot of people talking about that, but I’ve not read the book or seen any of it. Was it any good? Though I suppose if I keep listening; you’ll end up telling me in another episode.

Episode 500: Yes, you missed mentioning me! Fortunately, I was able to attend anyway. :p

Corona Virus Face Mask Fabric Pattern: My current, primary maskis just grey, no pattern; but it is double-layered with a filter pocket.

Neck Gaiters: Yeah, I bought some of those too. I don’t like them so much for face masks, especially since they arrived after news of that study came out; but they do work nicely for keeping my hair out of my face. This has gotten a lot more important to me as it’s now been over a year since my last hair cut. Side note: I disagree, if you’re wearing a neck gaiter that bumps you up/out of monster territory.

I’d like to remind William and I have watched at least one episode on Youtube. I may do so again at some point in the future; but given that I lost the comment I’d been working on last time I watched/started commenting there, I do admit it’s unlikely to happen again anytime soon.

Politicians: Well duh, of course it means one of the candidates is a liar. In some dictionaries, politician means “One who deceives or outmaneuvers others for personal gain”; so yeah, politician = liar.

Kitty Parade: I like that much better than anything related to the UofI.

First non-kid show thing I watched as a kid? Ummm, no idea. Some of the earliest non-kid shows I recall watching include: Murder She Wrote, Magnum P.I., etc. Basically, we watched lots of murder mysteries in my house, but I don’t recall if they were reruns and airing at the same time or if we were watching when they were original airing.

Prior to getting an NES, we only had a single TV in the house that we were regularly allowed to use. Dad did have a little 6″ B&W travel TV but it was usually packed away and we were only rarely allowed to use it.
