Episode 477 : Modern Times

We had some major technical difficulties, including at least one chunk of dead air. But we did still manage to get it on YouTube, so enjoy that!

This week we discuss Tony’s prejudices about history, William’s prejudices about the future, and what a sea turtle does or does not eat. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

Are podcast episodes backed up for prosperity? Is that important or do you consider the podcast as more of a transient thing? –Stu

That’s a disturbing background image, even if I’m only listening to the podcast and not watching the Youtube stream today.

I’ve never been to Medieval Times myself, but always thought it might be interesting to do.

Yeah, the audio cut out at about the 20 minute mark and it took a minute or two to come back.

The Expanse: Yes, I watched all 4 seasons. Also, the audio cut out again just as Tony said they bailed after a few episodes.

The Expanse (conversation, take two): While I like the show; in a twist for me, I hated the books.

Crazy, Rich Asians: We’ve watched it and we really liked it. We probably would never gotten around to it, but we watched it pre-COVID with friends. We were surprised at home much we actually liked it.

The Expanse (conversation, take three): William’s take seems far. BSG was definitely better,;and I’d say the main reason people compare The Expanse to BSG is The Expanse is the only big-budget sci-fi show currently available.

No Man’s Sky: I’ve not played it for a while, but I keep it installed for when I feel like a bit of lonesome exploration. It does seem like every big update they put out does make the game better.

Backups of the podcast: I think we view the podcast as something we all experience, but I can imagine a future digital historian might find things of interest in your varied ramblings.

Today is the day the podcast never ends… never mind there it finished. 😉

I’m determined to catch up and listen on sequence, and it’s OK and that no one will see this comment.

So my question here, about archiving versus the transient nature of podcasts was kinda tied in to me getting into the Internet Archive, and (weirdly) walking around the Library of Alexandria in Assassins Creed. By pure chance, Tony was talking about this being a moment of history just before reading this question, which was actually perfect. This absolutely is history, but how many other moments in history were accompanied by what is essentially two friends talking and catching up? Maybe macabre, but what if we had that from people on that fateful day in Pompeii? Or just chatting during the Blitz? Or any number of events. And, it’s perfectly framed in the thoughts of current society, because, despite claiming otherwise, you can’t help but touch on current affairs, at least broadly.

Now, will historians look you up specifically? No. But they’ll undoubtedly develop ways to mine the vast, vast amounts of our lives we emit every minute of every day on the internet, and I think conversations like these are actually perfect.

Full disclosure: I donated a couple of times to the Internet Archive, late 2020. I’m more and more convinced the mission is critical. Maybe I’m just getting old 🙂

With apologies for any auto correct foibles.

The Expanse is incredible. With my background in space and physics, I feel like I’ve finally found my home. Best thing on TV right now, and I’m on book 4.

Unfortunately I don’t recall everything you talked about, I’ve listened to this episode in chunks of a few minutes over a long period, such is my free time 🙂 Hopefully you’ll talk about it again and I can weigh in.
