Episode 476 : Three Pistols for the Chicken

We’re back! In that Tony is back from Oregon, back in Iowa. But we’re still doing it remotely, so that hardly matters.

Which also means we totally did it on YouTube, too!

We discuss how Tony drifted through his time in Oregon, fascinating conversation about the past of Iowa City landmarks, and we discover the currency that will dominate, after the apocalypse. Oh, and Craig’s totally scamming the UK elections. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

Have you ever spoiled your vote? –Craig

What was the most recent thing that gave you hope for the future? –Craig

Wow, changing to “I assume you’re going to be cleaning off William’s chair” sounds more accusatory of not doing it than the original wording. If it works for you and the producer, good for you guys; not sure that particular wording change would work for us.

It’s not a Sheraton anymore. It’s now a hotel called Graduate or “The Graduate. “I think I almost am that kind of nerd for the Iowa City downtown discussion, but it not quite enough to appreciate the whole conversation.

It is weird that William didn’t go home for breaks or interims because he lives close and is close to his family. I had a roommate who was from Iowa City who didn’t really go home either. She’d visit occasionally, but it seemed she saw her parents and siblings less often than mine who were 3 hours away.

Pretty sure if you spoil your vote/ballot, the machine that reads it at the end will “reject” it for over-voting and allow you to get a new ballot from the desk. Not sure there’s anything to do about it or if you even know if you vote absentee.

I’m with Tony, the name “Batman Unmasked” should be “Bruce Wayne.”

William – I’m also surprised you’ve been to Mideval Times at all, let alone multiple times. Did you go since you’ve been vegetarian? What do you eat?
I have been once, when I was around 12 or so, I think it was part of a Cub Scout family outing. I remember there was a soup course and it was the first time I’d ever seen/eaten Cornish game hen. I think we sat in the red section, or the red/yellow stripe section. It was pretty cool to see actual jousting and other knight skills on display. Senior year of high school, the guy I sat next to in economics class worked there as a trumpeter, which I thought was a fairly cool job to have as a high school student; much better than mine in discount retail. He’d tell us some stories about it, which was faintly interesting at the time, but all of which I think I’ve forgotten – most centered on what the adults who worked there did (this knight was late to this part of the competition last night because he took too long on his smoke break or this guy is dating that girl – stuff like that). I did not get any juicy behind the scenes info about the operations other than they apparently employed high school students as trumpeters. Eager to hear William’s recap as he sounds like he remembers the experience more vividly than I do.

So… I anticipate that Tony will ask about this whole Medieval Times thing tonight? Or something? But if he doesn’t, I’ll try to remember to come back and comment. I have no idea why he expressed interest in my going there, but we’ll see if he even remembers that he wanted to talk about it. 🙂 If we do talk about it, I doubt it will be a long conversation. I suspect he’ll find the topic is less interesting than he expected. 🙂

I think Tony is thinking of Eugene Vidocq who was a French criminal turned detective. He wrote an autobiography, “The Memoirs of Vidocq.” Poe’s detective is called “Dupin” and I think only shows up in two stories. I’m pretty sure Conan Doyle based Holmes on Doyle’s mentor Dr. Joseph Bell.

I’m catching up out of order so only just listened to this episode. In the UK votes are still counted by hand, you put a cross in the box for the party you’re voting for and that’s what counts. Anything else and it counts as spoiled, which must also be counted and reported. People here often deliberately spoil their votes as a means of protest, especially in safe seats where the first past the post system makes it all or nothing. For example I live in a constituency that leans so heavily towards one party that it’s essentially meaningless to vote for another so at our recent local elections I considered spoiling my vote. Ultimately I didn’t as it would have had 0 impact and voting for my preferred party meant there was at least a chance they’d get their entry fee back.

The Saga of William’s Chair: Mildly entertaining, but didn’t have as many kings in it as the title might have suggested.

Iowa City: When Michelle’s grandmother still lived over by Mercy hospital; we’d frequently park at her house and walk to everything we wanted in Iowa City. That was great. After her grandmother moved, we stopped spending much time in the downtown area as Tony is correct and parking sucks.

    MAWAGE, that bwessed awangment,
    that dweam wifin a dweam…
And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva…
    So tweasure your wuv

Victor Frankenstein: Huh, I don’t even remember hearing about this film before. I might have to check this out.

Bearskin: Like William, I’d never heard of this but some quick googling turned it up as a German fairy tale.

    Invalidate your vote: Nope.

Most recent thing that gave you hope for the future: Unfortunately, nothing is immediately coming to mind. All the good/hopeful things of late seem to be drowned out by the crap that’s going on.

Ok, this is the danger of me trying to listen to you guys while I’m working. I got distracted by my job and I know you guys went from talking about doomsday preppers to something about Batman’s mask to William having a staff to Tony being shocked to learn William has been to Medieval Times. I have no idea how you guys did that, and I’m working hard…. on trying to catch up on my listening so I can’t spend the time rewinding and listening to whatever the hell that was. 😀

    • Mark says:

Whoops, I forgot to remove the link to the show. See when I’m listening, I keep a note open with a link to that episode so I can easily get to it when I’m done listening and writing up my comments. Normally I remember to remove that but my current job requires more of my concentration than my old one — hence why I’m so far behind right now– but I forgot this time.

Even when I still had a job, it had been quite a while since I was able to listen to podcasts while I worked. Music, maybe. Sometimes.

I think maybe companies are trying to eliminate the positions that are so easy you could listen to podcasts. 🙂
