Episode 473 : We’ve Gone Visual!

The best and worst thing about the global pandemic — you can see us now!

Despite the desperate need for isolation, we refuse to stop entertaining you, our loving public. So we’ve recorded remotely, via Zoom. And Zoom has video!

Now, we’re an audio podcast, and plan to stay that way. But… if you’d like to watch the video for this episode… we put it on YouTube!

Here it is! Once it finishes processing! I don’t really understand how YouTube works.

So take your pick… sound or sound AND vision. Either way… Enjoy!

I believe that the difference between malt beverages are just beer that doesn’t legally qualify as “beer.” Just like if you do everything else right for bourbon, but change one variable (such as being made outside of America) it can’t be called bourbon but falls under a more umbrella term of Whiskey. I think beer has WAY looser definitions but still, it’s legally defined. Also, you couldn’t handle a Blue Claw. You think Four Loco was bad…

Ok, a little research on Wikipedia is telling me that what I’m talking about is not malt liquor. Malt liquor is stuff that’s listed as malt liquor, and is basically high alcohol-volume beer.

Malt drink is a large variety of products, including beer.

Of those, the one I’m talking about is alcopop, which is a British colloquial term. Wikipedia thinks the American term is “malternative,” but I’ve never heard that in my life.

Meanwhile, if a whisky is made with malted grain (grain that’s made to germinate for a bit before it’s dried for use), then it’s called “malt whisky”, “single malt”, etc…. which is why I asked how something “malt” could also be “beer”, because I knew about malted grain in the production of spirits but not in the production of brews.

The world of alcohol consumption is so confusing.

It super is, but it’s kind of fascinating. I generally just drink things called “Whiskey” or “Whisky” and don’t worry about it too much. But I am generally a bourbon guy. Malternative is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

      • Craig says:

Generally I’d have described an alcopop as a soft drink with added alcohol. Over here in the UK that would mostly be fruit juice or a fizzy drink such as coke/lemonade and then the alcohol would be vodka or rum based. They were popular in the late 90’s, early 2000’s then sort of disappeared. There’s been a resurgence lately with less of a focus on younger drinkers than they were originally marketed to.

Sorry to hear about the situation with your Dad Tony, it would be a tough time even without the current situation complicating travel and visiting.

  2. Beth says:

Thanks for the Zoom background tutorial. I was wondering how to do that, but hadn’t gotten around to looking it up.

Cats has never really appealed to me, but I thought it had run so long in London/Broadway that it must have something going for it – I’ll probably continue to put off watching the 2019 version. Also, I thought Judy Dench wasn’t acting anymore because of her deteriorating eyesight – that was the reason the Bond franchise cited for killing her off as a character.

I am sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you are able to spend some safe quality time with him.
