William – I’m not sure if these are exact fits for what you are looking for but Atomic Robo and Demon Hunters: A Comedy of Terrors both have rules for crafting/inventing that could be reworked for your setting. Atomic Robo is built directly on Fate Core (and I think is a better starting point for the system than Fate Core itself) while Demon Hunters is a drift of Fate that uses d4 through d12s instead of Fate dice.
Somewhere, I have Demon Hunters in PDF. I funded the Kickstarter.
In that case, it’ll be the chapter on Mad Science that would be of most use to William. Also if you ever run it let me know, I’ve released a few different adventures for the game and have plans for at least a few more.
Great minds think alike! A few weeks ago, Dave of Id sent me an email suggesting Atomic Robo and I have, indeed, been using those rules to guide the game mechanic I’ll be using. If I have a chance, I’ll perhaps take a look at Demon Hunters, too.
Fate Core has been working exceptionally well for me so far. We’ll see if that continues.
