Episode 395 : POG

This week, we discuss the point (or lack thereof) of establishing a time and place in a story. And a few movies. And then William joins the Ministry of Information. And Beth makes us sad. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

I love the first couple Puppetmasters, especially 3 when they are kind of gory superheroes fighting the Nazi’s.

World Cup: I wonder if there’s a difference between the coasts and the middle of the country in interest in the World Cup? William talked about allegiances based on where one’s ancestors might be from. I don’t know if I’m representative of a person on the East Coast, but for me, it’s not ancestors so much as current relatives and friends. I have an Aunt and cousins in Sweden and an Uncle and Aunt and cousins in Germany. (I have distance relatives in China, but I don’t know them.) Among my group of friends are people from Ireland, South Africa, Jamaica, Iran, Sweden, Venezuela, Russia, Japan, China, Korea and India. And I’m married to a Brit. So even if I’m not really into the World Cup, I sure hear a lot about it. 🙂

    “Blood Simple”…..*shiver*

I would not advise watching that one before trying to go to bed. It resulted in a sleepless night for me.

I teach “Raising Arizona” so that one does seem one of the Coen Bros. that bears rewatching.

This is great short film about shot/reverse shot in the Coen Bros.

A “Treasure Island” Coen remake seems like it would be great set in the Depression and with Pirates replaced by Flim-Flam Artists. Though maybe set in the Depression is too much of a Coen cliche.

I think “Rushmore” might be my fav Wes Anderson. After which I’m divided between “Moonlight Kingdom” and “Budapest Hotel.” It’s a bit unlike his other films. A little more realistic with characters that one can more directly empathize with.

  4. Craig says:

So I’m aware that you’re generally not sportsball people but I figured there was a slim chance you might have for reasons such as those William described, or you might have had a pools going at work.

Also yeah England getting where they did was… weird. As someone of Scottish heritage living in England I have really mixed opinions on how well I want them to do. I was brought up to want them to fail due to traditional England – Scotland rivalries. I also really hate the sense of entitlement that comes around every time England do well in football. Over here the fans often come across as arrogant and entitled with constant references to England winning in ’66. Growing up surrounded with those attitudes make it difficult for me to want England to win.

On the other hand my wife is English and a big football fan, she also likes to point out that I was born and raised in England so from her point of view should support them. It makes for a difficult balancing act.

  5. Mark says:

Pogs: Nope, I have no memory of this game, but Passionfruit/Orange/Guava juice sounds tasty.

Chainsaw noise: I cannot hear any of that in this recording.

Maniac: I watched the first episode of this and it seemed ok, but not especially compelling.

O Brother Where Art Thou: Great film, highly recommended.

Han Solo: William, I never knew you were a heretic until now.

World Cup: I’m definitely among the first to scorn sportsball, but I do watch the World Cup. Though I rarely keep up with it enough to root for a particular team for the entire cup. If I am going to try rooting for a team for it; I do so in the following order, dropping support as they fall out of the cup:
    1. Support my country’s team.
    2. Support the team(s) from countries that I have ancestral ties to.
    3. Support the team(s) from countries that I have been to and/or have an interest in going to.
    4. Support the team(s) that I feel are displaying better sportsmanship during the matches.

Canada sued you? Wha…? That doesn’t sound like any Canadians I know! I shall immediately complain to my local Canadian representative about this injustice!
