Episode 332: Tony is the Worst

For those of you who listen for William, I have bad news. This is a very Tony-heavy episode. He talks a lot about movies. He even completely spoils The Blackcoat’s Daughter, so if you want to see that, go do it before you listen. But then, the boys get into some deep stuff about being a good friend, and how to know it. Enjoy!

I don’t know if you’ve seen the controversy over the casting of “A Wrinkle in Time.” An extra factor in that one was that the director talked about the fact that she specifically took race into account. And then a whole bunch of people decided that was racist. *sigh*

I’ve heard that Spiderman is not doing as well as it might because of some of the mixed race relationship stuff.

I don’t know how one gets at what makes a movie more enjoyable to one person than another. I didn’t really find Wonder Woman lacking in the context of feminism. I’ve read a lot of those reviews and I kind of agree with the point that the people in the film were acting the way people in the early 20th century would act. It’d be strange if they acted all enlightened in regard to gender issues. I find some of the criticisms about race and particularly about War & Empire more compelling. But in the end, is that simply because the movie didn’t engage me emotionally as much as it did others? And if that’s the case, I can’t really say why it didn’t.

I wasn’t really clear that Bill would be back on Dr. Who. I certainly hope she is.

I always got a bit of an attraction vibe with John Sims and David Tennant. And there was a line in the last episode which implied attraction at some point earlier in their lives when both (the Master/the Doctor) ere male (as far as the Doctor can remember).

You’re right, it was not clear that Bill would be back. In fact, they seemed to imply she wouldn’t in some ways.

But in the world we live in, I’m confident that if the actor was leaving, and we were getting a new companion, they would’ve made a big thing about it in the news already.

My thought are that she’s probably just zipped off long enough to do the Christmas Episode with a different, temporary companion, and then bring her back for the new season.

But you’re right, we don’t know for sure. Though I’ll be pissed if Bill disappears for good.

Think this might be slightly spoilery for Spiderman.

Went to see Spiderman with my son. Interesting contrast with Tony’s interpretation. Like Tony, he saw Spiderman as screwing everything up, but unlike Tony, he didn’t think he was still presented as heroic, more like a kid who screwed everything up. I didn’t think he was presented as the person responsible for screwing everything up, just partially. I thought Tony Stark as the parental figure was also at fault–a combination of overprotectiveness, not paying enough attention, and not teaching what needed to be taught to deal with stuff. So it was kind of a movie about super hero parenting. 🙂

I loved Michael Keaton. One thing I especially loved was that they didn’t make him all angsty as Spiderman heroes have been in the past.

Michelle was awesome. She should have her own movie.

I knew which episode you were talking about (I think).

Dr. Who: I really need to get around to watching that last season to be ready for the next one.

Spiderman Homecoming: I’ve still not seen it. I’ve heard from multiple people with compatible taste in movies that it’s great but I’m so tired of Spiderman. Plus, I didn’t care for the character’s appearance in Civil War.

Black Coat’s Daughter: How dare you spoil a movie I’ve only heard you talk about and that I have no interest in ever seeing!

If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know? All of the Powerball jackpot numbers for the next 20 years? But then I’m a much shallower and more materialistic person than the two of you.
