Episode 321 : Just Passed Thunderdome

Catch up tonight. Lots of media dump. But also some deep moral questions, and the truth about bratwurst that THEY don’t want you to know. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

Hey Hat, I have a question that seems to be at the core of my moral code, and I want to hear the answer: Competition. Cooperation. Two ideas enter. One idea leaves. What happens? –Marshall ‘Mick’ Hitch

Whoa, whoa, whoa… Contact is a bad first contact film? *sucks air through teeth* Well, I liked it (and it was the first ever DVD I bought), but yeah, I guess they chopped such large swathes from the book that it didn’t have the same bite. I’ve got an original hardback of the book, and I’ll exchange metaphorical blows with anyone who doesn’t like it!

Agreed on the JJ thing. And he just makes universes so small – like everyone looking up and seeing planets explode, he’s done that in at least two films – but I guess they’re still exciting.

I didn’t realize it was a book! That actually explains a lot. A great deal of the philosophical debate in the movie would do much better in a book. It’s just paced really poorly in the movie.

But there’s also a fair bit of the story that’s kind of hard to believe, honestly. And the biggest issue is that when we finally “make contact” in the movie… it’s just lame as hell. But I’m betting that could’ve been much better done in book form. 🙂

Contact is an acceptable first contact film, but the film is a poor shadow of the book.

William Late: I assume this means William wasn’t there five minutes before the start time and on that assumption I wish more of the people I work with tried to “William Late”. Ce serait très bien!

ME:A – It’s definitely very different but it’s still a lot of fun. I do have issues with the end of the game’s story and I’m very disappointed that it sounds like EA/Bioware won’t be releasing any DLC like the one hinted to be bringing the other races from the Milky Way galaxy. *sigh*

Shadow of Mordor: I dig end up plugging a game controller into my computer and trying this game again. Holy crap, it’s HARD and there’s no option to lower the difficulty. I think I need to find a guide or something to help find a better way to start off in the game.

Overpowered characters: As I play video games for fun and stress relief; I love being overpowered in them. 😀

Arrival: I wanted to see this but my wife wasn’t interested and so I never got around to it. I’m still interested in seeing it and I’m glad I’ve no background in linguistics.

    Current US Prez: Yup.

Charity Spreadsheet: Maybe Tony could pit his spreadsheet out as a Google doc that then others could review for suggestions of organizations to donate to?

Mountain Bikes: WTF? I like riding a mountain bike, what’s your problem man?

Thanks for that info on bratwurst. It’s a sore spot in our household. In Iowa, bratwurst was plentiful, you could get it from the butcher at HyVee in varieties of flavors and at an inexpensive price. We moved to DC and now all we can get are Johnsonville. I like Johnsonville fine, but my husband has complained on numerous occasions. We think the problem is that this area (the whole east coast?) is more interested in Italian Sausage. I don’t know exactly what the genetic difference is between the two, but I do not consider one a suitable substitute for the other. (i.e. bratwurst is way better).
