Episode 296 : Not a Fun One

Tonight, we talk about the election. I know, that sucks. Too bad. Feel free to skip this episode if you like. But William and Tony discuss the election, and their feelings about it, tonight. That’s pretty much it. Okay, a few minutes about Doctor Strange. Enjoy.

I have also been feeling the same way I did after 9/11–dark days ahead and things will not be the same.

Not much sleep, but needing to work. Something I’m dealing with is lots of my students freaking out. Many of them are feeling, justifiably, that they are not safe.

I have to say, I think this is my favourite episode to date. As things went south during the night, I assumed I would be prepared for the same legitimization of racism, bigotry, and xenophobia as Brexit engendered. However, while Brexit gave this tacit approval, in Trump we have the personification, now at the highest level, that these views are legitimate.

I need to give it a few days and properly put pen to paper on my thoughts. I will say I have considered many perspectives for this result, including the potential fast-tracking of conservative policy with the White House, Congress, and, presumably, SCOTUS in alignment. There are huge parallels to Brexit with rural areas voting for a roll of the dice, neoliberalism having abandoned them. But mostly, I had completely overlooked the normalization of Trumps views by a white privileged mindset, so appreciated this discussion.

Oh, and something I neglected to mention…

The phenomenal success of a candidate who described himself as a “democratic socialist”, Bernie Sanders, also spooked many Americans for whom Capitalism seems to have become a religion. Naturally, this skittish group is disproportionately white.
