Episode 223 : There Once Was a Hat from Nantucket…

A lot of catch up tonight, of course. Lots of movies and TV to discuss, both in general and in specific. Followed by poetry, and various philosophies on travel. Enjoy!

    I didn’t know JM Straczynski had a rep as a bad comic writer. I’ve only read Superman: Earth One, but I thought it was good.

    Also highly recommend Mad Max. Saw it with my son and we were talking about whether it’s the best action movie we’ve seen.

    I guess I always thought the expression was mostly applied to people who were playing crazy, which I guess isn’t wrong, practically speaking, but it really is about, as Tony said, “acting hard”.

    My favorite set of limericks (mostly ’cause of what it’s poking fun at):

    The Waste Land: Five Limericks

    I

    In April one seldom feels cheerful;
    Dry stones, sun and dust make me fearful;
    Clairvoyantes distress me,
    Commuters depress me–
    Met Stetson and gave him an earful.

    II

    She sat on a mighty fine chair,
    Sparks flew as she tidied her hair;
    She asks many questions,
    I make few suggestions–
    Bad as Albert and Lil–what a pair!

    III

    The Thames runs, bones rattle, rats creep;
    Tiresias fancies a peep–
    A typist is laid,
    A record is played–
    Wei la la. After this it gets deep.

    IV

    A Phoenician named Phlebas forgot
    About birds and his business–the lot,
    Which is no surprise,
    Since he’d met his demise
    And been left in the ocean to rot.

    V

    No water. Dry rocks and dry throats,
    Then thunder, a shower of quotes
    From the Sanskrit and Dante.
    Da. Damyata. Shantih.
    I hope you’ll make sense of the notes.

    I was only asking about vacation conversationally. As it happens, we honeymooned at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and watched Somewhere In Time (with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour) while we were there. We chose it for the mix of things-to-do and relaxation. We were very happy with our choice. William, are there other places you have visited that you recommend as on par with Mackinac Island?

    • William says:

      That’s a good question. The French Quarter of New Orleans, maybe. The older sections of Quebec City. Just about everywhere I went in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg) and Tallinn, Estonia.

      Places like Deadwood, South Dakota.

      There are plenty of Iowa towns that answer the question, too. Dubuque. Storm Lake and Clear Lake. Pella, maybe. The Amanas. Iowa City, even. In general, those small Iowa towns that have a well preserved historic district.

      That’s my opinion, anyway.

    Thanks for the input William! I think I need to move NOLA up on my list of places to visit, and not for the three reasons Tony came up with.

  7. Mark says:

    Push da’ Button: When you said this, it instantly brought to mind Salt-N-Pepa’s Push It.

    Trump for 2016: This has to be the most important (cash-free) endorsement of Trump’s political career!

    Orphan Black: Just started watching this recently (currently 2 episodes in) and really liking it.

    Mad Max: It’s got somebody from Farscape in it? That’s just one more reason to hate this move.

    Stitchers: Yeah, when I first heard about this one it sounded like it had potential. Unfortunately the more I heard about it the less potential it appears to have; from what Tony says here, I’m glad I’ve not watched any of it.

    Sense8: Just added it to my queue.

    Killjoys: Just saw the first episode last week and while mediocre is right; it was midly funny and I’ll probably watch more of it.

    Titansgrave: Yup, that’s been fun (currently watched through ep5).

    Limericks: Yeah, I couldn’t name any limericks either.

    Best place for vacation: Any place you can relax and/or have fun. :p
