Episode 141 : I Was Raised By Featherless Dinosaurs

This is the first part of a 2 parter. We’ve got the usual… movies, TV, video games… but most importantly, we’ve got dinosaurs! Dinosaurs are the coolest, so you know you’ve got to listen. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:
(* indicates question was abbreviated)

Dear Fedora Fiends, I got Fallout: New Vegas. Did you play it on the PC, and did you find it horribly buggy? — Mark McKibben *

Dear minions of the hat, Do you think dinosaurs are cooler now we think most of them probably had feathers? — Craig

I was listening to the podcast in the car and had just gotten to the question about why kids think Dinosaurs are so cool when I pulled into the driveway and turned it off. Hmm, I thought to myself (as is my wont), prolly ’cause they’re this combination of science and magic/fantasy–real dragons! I’ll have to write that in a comment…

Turned it back on and d’oh!

Well, I still have that other thing I was thinking–that they’re like the original Pokemon…

I have theees theory (and it’s not about dinosaurs) about why evolutionary discussions are so focused on the idea that everything must have an end result purpose. It’s a theory about the way story structures changed in the modern period. Maybe I’ll tell you about it some time 🙂

    I watch Dracula!

But I am not snarky about Dracula. :p

  4. William says:

Did I refer to the covering of birds as “foliage” when I meant “plumage”?

    *sigh*

I’m an idiot. And I’m shocked that Tony didn’t point it out right after said it.

  5. Azuretalon says:

I took my daughter to a dinosaur exhibit at the local museum about a year and a half ago and they had updated, feathered models. I have to say, feathers do not make for cooler dinosaurs. The velociraptors went from looking terrifying to looking delicious.

  6. Mark says:

Persian Flaw: I didn’t recognize this by its name either, though the description of what it is was familiar to me.

    Huh: Huh, huh, huh?

Tony’s Gaming Group: What are you playing again?

Fallout New Vegas: Wow that’s an old question. And yes I know how to get a hold of you; but I’m pretty sure at the time I wrote this you were begging for questions, so I figured why not? Side note: the stock PC version is very buggy but the modding community has worked to address this and there are add-ons that improve FNV’s stability.

Dinosaurs: Giant lizards are the “real-life” version of Godzilla and who doesn’t want giant lizards who could destroy a city? As for feathers or no, I too was raised on featherless dinosaurs. But I have so little contact with kids; who are the primary consumers of popular information on dinosaurs that I wasn’t even really aware of this particular controversy. So I suppose I’m sufficiently insulated from the issue that dinosaurs remain featherless in my mind.

Tony & Featherless Dinosaurs: I’m suddenly picturing Tony dressed as a caveman from one those cheesy 1960s sci-fi flicks and really not seeing much difference. :p
