Episode 52 : What a long, Jungian trip it’s been…

Tonight in our studio, famed author and deep thinker, Clifton Dee Hawk, takes on a prolonged voyage through the deep and awesome labyrinth that is the mind of a writer.

Then, later in the programme, Christmas Tree Ornaments.  Also, video games.

We mentioned this in the podcast before, perhaps, but Podiobooks is an awesome, totally free site for audio books.  Highly recommended, especially anything by Mur Lafferty.

Bewitched – No, they didn’t explain it. Not at all. Which is odd, considering they had the perfect excuse for him to suddenly look different and nobody seems to care… HELLO? MAGIC!

And yes, early episodes were either only in B&W or only survived in B&W.

    Yes, Templeton the rat.

While I haven’t listened to this episode yet; I do have response to Tony pimping Podiobooks. Which is to say if you enjoy good audio fiction, you might want to check out X Minus One. It’s classic sci-fi radio drama from the ’50s and is quite excellent. Of course, if sci-fi isn’t your thing the Internet Archive has a lot more OTR for you to choose from.

  3. Mark says:

Of course Dan’s a freak, but what episode possibly convinced him to start listening?

Epguides.com says Bewitched lasted 8 seasons; but given that Nickolodean used to air reruns of old TV shows at night, it’s easy to forget how many seasons of old shows were airing.

Speaking of reading, I’ve finally read through all 13.75 (including the short story collection and a novella) books of the Dresden files.

William: Don’t worry about talking too much –so long as you don’t do it as often as other people– we don’t mind and we luvs you.

Random side note, just too strange not to share: Darth Vadar bagpipe unicycle

  4. Craig says:

Not a comment about the episode itself but is it possible to adjust the sound levels in the episodes at all? I’ve been finding that I need to turn the volume right up when listening to the podcast and even then its not overly loud. I don’t know if its a normalisation thing, the intro / outro is coming out far louder than the actual episode, as is some of William’s laughing (and by far louder I mean painfully loud when I’ve got headphones on).

I will try and remember to adjust the intro and outro down lower still, Craig. I usually turn them down, and the episode track up, though I think I forgot this time.

Unfortunately, with just the one mic, and my lousy tech knowledge of such things, our actual *episode* recording is just one mono track… so I have no idea how to fix William’s laugh, short of killing him.

      • Craig says:

Cheers, and to be fair I think William’s laughs are only too loud due to me already having the volume turned right up. I suppose the other option is I stop trying to listen to the show while on my Friday commute but then how do i put up with the joy that is the London Underground?

  5. Stuart says:

Hang on, there was only a series and a half of Buck Rogers? It felt as long as SG1 when I was a lad. I’m going to have to look that up, and possibly that lass who played the, er, high ranked lass pilot person thingy.

By the way, if it helps, I often laugh out loud at the podcasts and your tweets (which is awkward in the office).

F0r reference, Piers Morgan is a bellend, and (hopefully) caught up in the whole phone hacking/police bribery thing in the UK, for his time as editor of The Mirror newspaper.

Oh blimey, favourite video game is a difficult question. I’m not sure I could pick a single one, even breaking it down by childhood and current. I was an MMOer for years, so spent untold hours in EVE Online, Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft. A proper mind blowing game was Half Life 2; incredibly varied environments and gameplay, with an absolutely gripping story line. I think currently, it just has to be the Mass Effect series. I’ve currently got 2 games on the go; a second play through as renegade, which is about 75% of the way through game 1, and my paragon Shepherd which is about an hour into 3. It’s such an incredibly compelling story and engaging game that I simply don’t tire of it. I think I’d like to play through it again some time, possibly as a force wielder (biotic) throughout, although I’ll need to leave it a while first. Honorable mention goes to the KOTOR games. I’ve had a few replays there too, I just wish I could play it in front of my TV now, instead of at the PC.

But yeah, I was never interested in Mass Effect but begrudgingly gave it a go on a recommendation, for 20 bucks. I’m sure people say it all the time, but if you’re in any way interested in roleplay type games, you simply must play this series. PS3 owners might want to grab it on the PC or something, I still think it’s worth playing the first.

  6. Stuart says:

Oh, and on BioWare… I think everyone’s fears of their having been bought by EA have come to pass. BioWare’s name are being stamped on games they have nothing to do with, to try and trade on their name. The adage that “it’s BioWare so almost certainly good” doesn’t apply, any more.

Really sad, but I just hope their partnership with EA means they have a stupidly big pot of money to develop new IP.

  7. Mallory Keaton says:

Okay, like, I kinda dig William.
