Episode 643 : A Convenience Store for Podcasts

YouTube link here. Minimal kitties, but maximum gesticulations!

This week, we don’t get to an email. Thank you so much to those who did write in, but we just had so many things we watched, and so many opinions about it. But please continue to email, and we WILL get to them soon, I promise. Enjoy!

The Detectorists is a great show! I highly recommend. Very sweet and funny.

I stopped watching Station 11. Can’t say more without spoilers, but, Tony, email me if you want to discuss.

The thing William was asking about when people say “I love X” — I had two thoughts:

Initially, I was wondering about whether this is related to how one is raised because my Dad was very much of the camp of “You show reverence for food by preparing it well, not by eating a lot of it.” Sort of along the lines that it is disrespectful of the fact that your life is dependent on the consumption of other life (whether plant or animal) to just mindlessly eat a lot of stuff. Mindful eating, I guess.

And then that got me thinking that the other response is really about consumption more than about the thing consumed. (Not that the thing consumed makes no difference, but that the consumption is the main point.) And so I wonder if we are all being directed by capitalism toward–“I love X”–consume, own, listen to, watch, as much X as possible.

I really like the movie White Nights as well. I should go back and rewatch it.

Buh Da Buh Ba Ba! I’m lovin’ it! πŸ™‚

It’ll be interesting to see if I give up on Station Eleven. We watched the second episode last night, and I’m more on board now, while Trish is less on board.

Detectorists is sitting on Tubi, I’m planning to watch it, I think. πŸ™‚

Oh, “queer coding” reminded me that I’m watching a Chinese series called “The Untamed.” It is from a danmei novel (danmei are romances between male characters), but the government doesn’t allow danmei in visual media, but it’s so clearly still there that it’s a bit funny. Like the two characters are described as “soulmates.” I guess somehow that’s still OK as far as the censorship rules go? If interested, I would warn people that the first episode was really confusing. I went and read the Wikipedia description after I watched it. After that, not so much.

The ways various Asian countries get around homosexuality being illegal and/or severely discouraged in society, while still managing to make art and content *about* homosexuality and queer relationships is always fascinating to me. Sad, frustrating, but fascinating. Life finds a way, etc, etc… πŸ™‚

I am caught up! I did a lot of yard work the last couple weeks while listening and am pleased to report that the front and side non-grass areas are momentarily weed free (it feels a stretch to call all of that space β€œgarden”) and caught up on TMTH! I also bought a few new big bushes and am pleased with the impact they make on the parts I would classify as garden.
