Episode 595 : It was Just a Joke

YouTube link here. A little something for all you Ezzie-heads out there.

This week is a shocker! Tony makes a big announcement, we learn the true origins of the podcast, and… Tony talks a lot more. It’s mostly Tony, if I’m honest. But there are a few surprises in it, so that’s fun. Right? Right? Enjoy!

Sorry, if I’ve been a bit awol. Whole family has been down with COVID, though we are all on the mend now, and had pretty mild cases.

Thanks for sharing what’s going on with you Tony. I didn’t know some of that stuff (like I knew the stomach could stretch back, but I didn’t know about the life-long side effects). What you’re doing sounds like a really good plan that is taking advantage of the support that’s available. I also didn’t realize Planet Fitness was that inexpensive…though I don’t think I’m ready to go back inside a gym yet.

I’m also loving “The Sandman.” Just finished the 3rd episode. My one complaint so far, which has to with that episode, is the way that Johanna Constantine was styled. It seems to me that the way John Constantine is dressed, and his general kempt/unkempt-ness, reflects something about his situation and how he feels about himself. I think Johanna is supposed to have the same character situation and styling her in the same way would add to what’s going on with her. And I can’t help thinking the idea not to do it in the same way has to do with gender.

I thought it was cool that it’s not only a gender swap but also a time-swap, or an ancestor/descendant swap.

      Oh no! COVID. 🙁

I felt the same about Constantine. Constantine should be more… grizzled, overall. Johanna was too dashing and lovely. And clean, you’re right.

The ancestor thing threw me a bit. Does the original character come from a line of magic users? I thought they did. Or are they implying that Johanna is somehow John’s… daughter, I guess? Cuz of the time change? That would be especially strange, given the aspects of John’s history that were integrated into Johanna.

I think in The Sandman comic there is also a Johanna Constantine. She’s not living in the present time, but in the 18th century, and I think John is her descendant. Haven’t seen yet whether they’ll replace the 18th century Johanna from the comic book story with an 18th century version of John Constantine in the tv story, but it would make sense.

Oh, you’re right! I forgot about her! Maybe they’ll do that.

Having just watched the 5th episode, I now realize that they’re definitely going to cover more than the first volume. And they might be leaving out some of the flashbacks? I’m not sure, we’ll see.

The fifth episode was the one I was dreading. And I didn’t enjoy it. But it’s passed now.

  2. Azuretalon says:

I’ve finished Sandman, and I loved it so much. For me, you’re right that Johnna has some not-John traits but it didn’t bother me too much. I just rolled with she’s a different character in the originals place.

I don’t which villain you were referring to being more nuanced and sympathetic, I can think of at least two contenders. In both cases those were net positives.

The fourth Endless we meet got a dramatic make over, probably the biggest departure but one I totally understand narratively, if i chaff a little as a purest.

I am guessing the lower than deserved scores for it are due to anger about the color-blind, gender swapped, and otherwise “woke” casting. I wouldn’t think the people that complain about that would also be Gaiman fans but I am also not shocked by it anymore in the world. Clearly somewhere south of 14% isn’t a majority.

My only complain about Death is small and moot. In a climate were we didn’t have racism or a racist past I would have loved to have been her more Monochromatic. But I get we simply can’t paint an actor solid white or solid black and have that be a good look socially.

The only other note I had, and it’s super not possible and I get that…. It would have been so cool if each Endless had a stable of actors… leave the ones we have in place to play them interacting with each other and their realms but have had Death change actresses depending on which mortal she was interacting with. But that would be super confusing to the mainstream audience and I’m guessing very costly. Though we did get that for one moment.

I also wouldn’t have hated the actors changing per season like the artists changing per volume but now I love them all so I don’t want to see them go.

    ::deep breath::

Peacekeeper was way better than it needed to be or had any excuse to be. I had so many feels by the end and I really loved it. I expected a bunch of “OMG WTF” and there was plenty but it was so much better than just that.

My wife had bariatric a few years back, and it’s been great for her. She gained back some weight over the “Goal” but she’s still in a lot better place than she was. The side effects of “Things that you can’t have” is real though and there are plenty of things we know will make her sick. It’s been kind of minor to work around. We just no longer go to anything all you can eat though. The surgery to remove loose skin was probably the worst part of it. Painful and “cosmetic” so they insurance wouldn’t cover it.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Azuretalon, can you articulate the benefit of the surgery for your wife? To a degree, I understand losing a lot of weight being helpful to certain people (myself included), but is there a benefit to it happening so quickly? A benefit to offset the (apparently in your wife’s case) minor side effects you live with afterwards?

I’m still trying to keep an open mind about this, that maybe I *would* want to get the surgery. I just haven’t seen any evidence yet.

  3. Beth says:

Maybe people want to use their removed stomachs for making human haggis?

For several years now, my “base” amount of water to drink daily is 80 ounces. When I was in the hospital after giving birth to baby #1, every nurse would tell me I “need to drink a lot of water” so I drank and drank and drank and finally asked a nurse “how much water” and she said to try for 64oz a day. On that particular day, I had already had 128 oz before breakfast.

I’ve only had to actually go to jury duty once – it was during a summer while I was in college. I had to go to downtown Chicago. They told me to bring a book – it was good I brought 3 because I just sat in the waiting room for 6+ hours while they did jury selection before they allowed me to go home.
Also in college, I had to call to defer once or twice (since I had my drivers license in Illinois and went to college out of the area) and once had to call in to see if I’d need to go and did not have to because I did not have a last name in the A-L section of the alphabet.
While you cannot be fired for having to do jury duty, some employers will pay your regular salary while you’re at jury duty, but some employers don’t pay you at all which can be a really big income difference for some people. I remember I got paid $17 by the county for the day I had to go to jury duty, and would have made ~$12/hour(?) at my internship.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Mine payed $32.50, which is the most money I’ve brought in for a while! 🙂

Yeah, the orientation thing said to bring a book… and I figure if they even admit it’ll be that dull, I *definitely* should bring something. 🙂
