Episode 554 : Worst Episode Ever

YouTube link here. With dueling Williams!

This episode is a mess, technically. William flees, then returns, then splits in two. Honestly, it’s a lot. Plus, the medical industry is pranking William, and Tony opens up about therapy all thanks to an innocuous question by Stu. Enjoy!

I’m not making super progress catching up but this was actually a great episode to dive into and just what I needed to hear towards the end. Really appreciate this discussion. I’m pretty sure I submitted the question on a day when I was thinking about you swinging by my cube and us having these chats about something or nothing, Tony.

I should probably qualify that we do get a little banter via our work chat system. And I’m totally au fait with chatting online, I think I spent most of my 20s glued to IRC. I think I’m changing in a way that either covid caused, by way of essentially 18 months of hardly seeing anyone, or has just made me realize as I get older that I need in-person interactions way more than I thought I did. 20-something me would have bent over backwards to sit in my pyjamas and mash at the work keyboard all day long. 40 something me is struggling a bit. Now, I am very much enjoying working from home, and I’m lucky enough that my wife is here doing the same, so I’m not alone alone. Obviously, we chat throughout the day but sometimes one or both of us have to be properly heads down and you can inadvertently spend a day in complete silence.

Also, team structure has changed at work. While before the pandemic we had a close-knit team that was VERY vocal in person, even as we’re all major introverts, most team meetings now are awkward silence, and I find I’m the chatty one. Tony will attest to that being weird. I am not typically the life of the party, much less the meeting. That would be fine, but on the rare occasion that the more chatty among us let loose a little (and it’s pretty much the same 4 or so of us out of the group of, I dunno, nearly 20) I can’t help but feel it’s just a notification annoyance to others. And for some reason, this NEVER happens in direct chat. Maybe we’re all burnt out from being heads down for so long. I dunno.

Sorry, another frightful ramble where I don’t think I had a point but this was just good for me to air. I should probably buy a webcam. Only my boss uses his, so at least I’ll have it for my 1 on 1s with him.

So, yeah, I really didn’t anticipate this aspect of being a permanent WFH employee, and it surprises me as someone about as introverted as one can be. Still think that this was the right decision, just need to figure out how to connect more. Maybe if/when covid subsides that’ll be easier.

Just chiming in to say Ted Lasso might be the best written TV series I’ve ever watched. I don’t think I’ve ever attached myself to characters as quickly as I did in the first season, and season 2 just runs with it. It has twice reduced me to tears, which is remarkable.

Webcam would be a good idea. And they’re super cheap!

Yeah, I mean, I’m one without a job now, so it’s different for me, but I think… I think a lot of this is pointing to “don’t rely on work for your social life.” As we get older especially, we need to cultivate friends outside of work, friends that we still talk to regularly.

Season 2 of Ted Lasso is doing my head in, hard. But in a good way.
