Episode 535 : PCU

YouTube is here. What color is the drink?

This week, we discuss big potential changes, and desperately ask for listener input. We also discuss mental health, but in a very unhelpful way. And Tony gets VERY mad at commercials. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

Hack the hat! Read its emails! Go long!

Also I forgot to mention but Project Cassandra is now out and available to purchase – I’d add a link but I think the website just ate my last comment that included one. So search for Project Cassandra on either drivethruRPG or itch to find it.

Go forth with digitization! Your listeners could better detail out bits to help with William’s thinking about a response… such as detailing out a specific situation that warranted a question/comment based on content presented in The Hat episode.

I think you can probably tell from my blog posts that I would favor more space to write questions. Now I’ll just have to remember all those questions I didn’t send because they needed to much explanation…

The question about bad advertising was prompted by the current ad for the iphone 12 that has “The Candyman” song playing while purple paint coats the phone like chocolate. I really hate that ad, though in some ways its being pretty brazen in what it’s saying. “Buy this phone which you don’t really need, and which has no important features except that it is a pretty color. Ignore the cost of conflict minerals in buying this crap. Because, you know, it’s just like crack…I mean candy…”

Oh, yeah, that one annoyed me as well. I generally get annoyed any time the iPhone advertises just for a new color. I mean, you don’t see cars advertising new colors. It’s too much money to spend just for a new pretty color.

But I get “the market” disagrees, or they probably would stop making the commercials.

The Rivers of London series is really good. It’s one of those series that’s even better as an audiobook because the narrator is so good. I especially like the voice he does for Detective Inspector Nightingale. I may have mentioned this before, but the series has been picked up by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to do a TV series.

I have stumbled upon the perfect summer reading book for me recently called “The Mask of Mirrors.” It’s got a central “con-artist” story, an urban Robin Hood character called “The Rook” (whose title seems to be passed from one generation to the next), and a minor character who is a charming and swash-buckling female fencing master.

Added to my Goodreads. But as per usual, I’m not touching it until the trilogy is done. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. jas says:

Forgot I also had a show to recommend called “We Are Lady Parts” on Peacock. It’s about 4 young Muslim women in a Punk Rock band in the UK.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

      Yeah, it looks really good!

And of course, only the first episode is available for free (with ads). *sigh*

  6. Azuretalon says:

Honestly, Itโ€™s your show and your listeners wonโ€™t be going anywhere, so if after 10 years you need to shift format some, you do you

  7. Beth says:

Show format: without the cards in the hat, is there really a hat?
Digested questions: After the initial bunch (circa 2011), I always check my questions to make sure they’re 140 characters or less, so it does annoy me when they get digested from that point since I am being careful to follow the rules…

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Well, you’re a few hours late, the decision has been made.

Going forward, you need not restrain yourself in your email length any longer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Beth says:

The commercials I most love to hate are those where the commercial itself is memorable, but you can’t remember what product it’s advertising for.

    Private universities – expensive!
