Can confirm selective service is still a thing! And I made damn sure I was outside the age range, because it’s part of emigrating here.

The census discussion was interesting. I bet the government, or some agency thereof, has a whole bunch of numbers showing immigrants probably pay more taxes. Not literally, but factoring in no prior expense on k-12 education, etc. And of course, in terms of legal immigration, there’s already a master list of immigrants, so you wouldn’t need to derive it from a census. I have a unique alien number on file, even though I’m now a citizen, assigned by USCIS. I don’t know what inter agency agreements there are though, so maybe the DoJ doesn’t have our particulars.

I did like the description of generations. Obviously, they’re some sort of normalized distribution in terms of who does and doesn’t meet certain generational traits, but it’s still a useful metric for some things. I get annoyed if a company has a crappy website, but I’m sure some people prefer a good phone representative. Divides along significant world events and technological changes is probably a better indicator, as noted. It’s quite easy to find poignant examples too, for instance the infant mortality rate due to polio etc., those who raised children then probably despair at anti vaxxers now. Where will the need for instant gratification take us? No idea, but that’s a fascinating cross classical generation issue through smartphone ownership (which is why broad delineation by technology seems more useful).

    – written on my phone, excuse any autocorrected nonsense!
