Read this review of “Random Acts of Flyness” and it looked worth checking out. Thought people here might also be interested.

Ok, so to me the intro and outro are still a lot louder than the actual podcast. I had a quick look in Audacity to see why normalising doesn’t seem to be having an effect. The intro and outro were pretty clear from a quick glance at the file:

It turns out though that Audacity uses the peak amplitude rather than the average to normalise by and there are a few loud points (mostly laughter) in the main track that it is normalising against.

I don’t know enough about the software or your setup to know the best way to get around it. One option is to amplify the episode with clipping (~20db seemed to work on the section I tried) before adding the intro and outro and exporting.

It’s weird, though, because I normalize all three files together at once. Intro, outro, and episode.

Hrm… this starting to become work. It may be time to cancel the podcast.

      • Craig says:

So I think the issues are the laughter spikes, normalising is probably setting those as the loudest points then making everything else in the episode quieter. With the intro/outro, there aren’t the same spikes in volume so the loudest point isn’t too different from the normal.

But you’re right, this is starting to sound like it’ll take some work to solve it which would probably be more effort than it is worth.

Dialogue Options not matching up: This is one more reason why playing on the PC is frequently superior. Many RPGs do this sort bait & switch bullshit, but on the PC there are frequently mods to fix the problem.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms: *shrug* It was fine and seemed well written but it just didn’t grab me. The Fifth Season (different series, same author) was better but spent too much time setting things up for future books and not enough on resolving issues in the here & now. I also didn’t care for how it constantly jumped around in the timeline.

Note: I’m listening to this episode on (09/28/2018) and couple of my Republican co-workers are currently tossing arguments in favor of Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS nomination. I’m trying to pay more attention to the podcast and not get angry, but I think I’m failing at both of those. 🙁

    Most evil rankings: Heh.

Divorce: *shrug* I don’t understand why there’s still (or really ever was) a stigma to it. People sometimes grow apart that’s life and it would be better for all if people didn’t cause such a fuss.
