I agree with what Will was saying about the way we treat teenagers as children and I’ll add a couple of specific things about education in a separate comment. However, the hypersexualization of young girls I think has very little to do with that. I think both the hypersexualization of young girls and the increasing identification of female sexuality (of any age) with the very young are both primarily responses to feminism.

First, there has been for a very long time the identification of female sexuality with youth and specifically with childlike looks. Hairlessness=prepubescence. Eye make-up makes eyes look bigger as they do in children, blush and lipstick imitate the looks of children. At one level one could say this has a biological component in that we are programmed to find childlike looks appealing. But the reason it is primarily directed at women has more to do, I think, with finding power in women threatening (and thus unattractive).

But the more recent hypersexualization of young girls gives girls the message that the means to power is sexuality. To some extent the culture has always identified female power with sexuality. But I see this more recent phenomenon as a response to feminism because feminism has made it not culturally OK to deny women power. So the culture’s response has been, yay, girl-power, and girl-power means sexual power.

So at one and the same time we tell adult women–remove signs of actual power in order to be considered attractive. (Actual power, like women who are in positions of authority, is represented as repulsive.) And we tell young girls, if you want to achieve adult positions of power, be sexual.

As a college teacher I completely agree that we have to go back to making college optional. We are going to have do a major revamp of the lower grades first though. College can not be optional at the moment because the students who are coming in to college are not prepared to live and work as adults. The majority of my students do not have reading comprehension skills that would allow them to function well in our society. They also don’t have the maturity to handle responsibility or to be self-directed.

Re: The Godfather–great conversation and I agree with everything you guys were saying about the film.

However, I’d disagree with the idea that films were not that well made in the 70s. There are just so many great directors working at that time–Coppola, Scorsese, Kubrick, Altman, Bogdanovich, Friedkin, Polanski. I think the argument’s actually been made somewhere that the 70s is the greatest era for directing and film-making and that it all kind of got brought down by Star Wars and the subsequent era of the blockbuster.

Another great movie of that time period–“The Last Picture Show.”

Bad horror movies–Tony, next time you’re looking for one check out “Blood Feast” & “Color Me Blood Red.” My Dad’s got a big part in the first one (Chief of Police) and my family is basically the extras in all the scenes in the second one.

    • William says:

Oh yeah… that’s an impressive list of directors who made great films during the 70s… how could we have forgotten?

Though, to be fair… there were, actually, plenty of really crappy movies being made in the 70s, and they handily outnumbered the great films. I think that’s where Tony was coming from (and that’s the sentiment I was agreeing with).

But, yeah, we really were remiss for not pointing out how much great film came out of the 70s, especially in comparison to decades before and since. (Although the early decades of film were pretty frickin’ awesome.)

I think Blood Feast is on my watchlist, actually! I’ve never heard of “Color Me Blood Red” but I’ll look for it. πŸ™‚

Sound quality–yeah, last week I didn’t even realize Tony was sick!

But actually, I’m still having a lot of trouble hearing him.

  5. Beth says:

Tony, i guess this leaves me as the last person on earth to see the godfather. You should have warned for possible spoilers.

Tony, sound quality still not great, there was a lot of static on this episode that’s usually not there.

    • themagicaltalkinghat says:

Nope! I found out one of my gaming group has still never seen it. So you and he need to sit down and watch it!

I think 45 years might be a bit past the statute of spoiling. πŸ™‚

Static? Crap. I’ve mostly been hearing that I’m still quieter than him. But static? Shoot. Well, we’ll try something new tonight….

      • Beth says:

Maybe you should try listening to 5 minutes of podcast to hear what it sounds like to listeners. I know you don’t like to do extra work, but it might make setting sound levels easier (thus, ultimately saving you work overall). πŸ™‚

        • themagicaltalkinghat says:

*generic whining and stomping, like a petulant child*

That’s what I have William for!

Besides… I sometimes go to great lengths to avoid work. Even greater lengths than it would take to do the work, sometimes! πŸ™‚

  6. Mark says:

Hopefully fixed its intermittent sound problems by throwing money at the problem: So are you hoping that you’ve fixed the problem or hoping that nobody else has had the same issue?

Tony’s sound: Well, so far this episode your levels are fine but your voice sounds like shit. Hopefully you’re feeling better by now.

Are you electronically gifted because you got a new mic?

Favorite weapon in FO4: Missile launchers are too slow. A .50 caliber sniper rifle with a suppressor and the right perks and legendary on the rifle (two shot if you can get it) let’s you do ridiculous amounts of damage if you can sneak up on the enemy.

Ballistic Mesh: You get this from the Railroad. Also if you were playing on the PC, you could get a mod to add a concealment option to your armor, letting you have awesome armor and still look amazing.

Brotherhood of Steel: Yup, total wackjobs. Also their stupid vertibrids must have Capissen 38 Mark II engines as those damn things just fall right out of the sky.

Power Armor: Yup, I’ve got a number of suits (some complete, some not) lying around my settlements.

The Godfather: Huh, you know I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually seen it from start to finish and now I see it’s not available for streaming from Netflix and not a free option from Amazon Prime. Though sounds like you think it’d be totally worth watching. Also, it was made in 1972.

Buying VR system: Not anytime soon, the price point is still too damn high. If it were affordable, supported more games, and wouldn’t require an all new computer.
