Episode 227 : Shia the Beef

We started about 20 minutes late this time. Forgive us. But it’s still interesting, I think. Also, as this is part 1 of a 2 part series, I’ve already mostly forgotten about it. So you’ll have to listen and find out. Enjoy!

What ability/skill would either of you like to acquire or to improve?  –Jas

Er, I should add… as I recall now, I think you are supposed to think you “die” in the ride, but I never got the impression you’re killing yourself. You accidentally fall or are pushed, is how it seemed to me. I think the only reason people pull suicide into it is because they want to, for some reason, add extra weight to that aspect of what the “ghost host” says at the beginning of the ride. But I don’t understand what compels them to emphasize that bit of narrative. (For that matter, it’s not obvious that the “ghost host” committed suicide… he could have been murdered by hanging…)

I can’t remember, but have you guys ever talked about the song “Shia LaBeof” by Rob Cantor?

Just one quick clarification on the California vax legislation. It requires that all kids be vaccinated (with medical exemptions, not personal belief exemptions) who are going to attend public school. If people don’t want to get their kids vaccinated, they’d have to home school them.

And this is the most up-to-date description by FDA on the thimerosol preservative:

“What progress has been made towards the goal of eliminating thimerosal from vaccines?

Great progress has been made in removing thimerosal from vaccines. Manufacturers have been able to accomplish this goal through changing their manufacturing processes, including a switch from multi-dose vials, which generally require a preservative, to single-dose vials or syringes. Since 2001, all vaccines manufactured for the U.S. market and routinely recommended for children ≤ 6 years of age have contained no thimerosal or only trace amounts (≤ 1 microgram of mercury per dose remaining from the manufacturing process), with the exception of inactivated influenza vaccine. In addition, all of the routinely recommended vaccines that had been previously manufactured with thimerosal as a preservative (some formulations of DTaP, Haemophilus influenzae b conjugate (Hib), and hepatitis B vaccines) had reached the end of their shelf life by January 2003.”

The mention of Joaquin Phoenix stint as rap artist reminded me of something. My son works for a movie theatre during the summer, and he brings home funny stories about one particular customer who is a regular and commits a number of malapropisms. When the movie, “Inherent Vice,” was playing, the customer asked my son who this guy “Joe Queen Phoenix” was. I think this would be either a good drag act name or a wrestling one–if he ever considers another career expansion.

I’m not sure how, maybe William was messing with the email notifications or something, but I completely didn’t see any of the comments on this episode until just now.

  5. Mark says:

    Trolling: Bah.

Masculinity: Yup, cowboy masculinity in the wild, wild west was what was in my head too.

    Horror movies: Meh.

Reading legislation: I read some, sometimes. Like William, I’m on a variety of email lists that inform me of upcoming legislation that touches on my areas of interest. Is it safe to ignore the upcoming legislation? No. Is it crazy to read it all? No, but people who don’t read it won’t agree with that statement. In an ideal world, you’d elect your representatives and could trust them to to vote appropriately.

Shia the Beef: We didn’t miss all of it, just most of it.

Ability to acquire or improve: Assuming we ignore superpowers, I’d like some sort of musical ability. It’s not one I’ve ever really had and occasionally felt the lack.

Haunted Mansion = Suicide: Nope, never heard that before and it sure sounds like the sort of bullshit nonsense one finds on the internet rather than something would have a legitimate basis in reality.

Crafting activity for Tony: What about crafting chain mail? There are any number of tutorials you can find online and at least when using aluminum, it’s fairly easy to do.
