Episode 163 : What of thou Martian Manhunter?

More of William’s freaky childhood this week, including a fire. Tony’s theory that he’ll become a serial killer continues. Then we talk superheroes, and superpowers. And some dumb stuff about animals. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

This may be my favoritest title ever! 🙂

I was reminded of a recent series on JL8 by your conversation about whether Green Lantern is super-powered. There’s a storyline in which the Green Lanterns are a scout troop led by Mr. Scott and with 8 year old members Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Thaal Sinestro. Hadn’t thought of it til just now, but is kinda cool that Yale Stewart made Alan Scott the scout leader for more reasons than that he’s the oldest.

Anyway, the scout troop idea makes me think of the ring less as a power and more as a skill.

    Thoughts:

I think anyone that can do something above human potential, despite why they can, have superpowers. Everyone has something that gives them that power and it can be taken away. Superman has our yellow sun, Batman has Gadgets, Mutants have their X-factor. Batman (and others), just don’t have inherent powers.

Also, Kyle Rayner is the creative Lantern you were thinking of, being a comic book artist.

    Speed Buggy

    • Bloodsparrow says:

      “Super Heroes” like batman…

      The Huntress

      • Bloodsparrow says:

        Oh and another one!

I don’t know much about… I think his name is “Miracle Max “? It’s my understanding that he had a natural talent that was honed with what we will call “training” right now.

      • William says:

Indeed… and Batwoman and Batgirl and Robin and Nightwing… not sure why I neglected to mention any of them in the “other heroes like Batman” context…

        • Bloodsparrow says:

Well, I was trying to think of examples that didnt have “bat” in the name “Nightwing” not withstanding.

Also interesting that the main villans that come to mind are in the same boat. What are Lex LLuthor’s powers? What does have the Joker going for him that is super human other than how he looks?

          Likewise with Catwoman.

          • The Producer says:

Being so batshit insane that they’re willing to cross normal human boundaries? Other than that, I’ve got nothing.

  4. Mark says:

Kickstarter: So what were the rewards for sponsoring the kickstarter that sponsored the podcast?

That’s right, ‘cuz I’ve got the holocaust cloak. It fit so nice, Miracle Max said I could keep it.

    How could one forget Scooby-Doo?

Childhood injuries: I had siblings and ended up breaking more bones than they did, but I didn’t turn into a serial killer. Childhood pain doesn’t guarantee serial killing in adulthood.

8 pack bottles: I think William’s talking about the old, 16 oz glass bottles that soda/pop used to come in. I have fond memories of drinking from those bottles on Sunday nights with the family, but I have no memories of buying them at the store. Though I would assume they came in the eight packs he was talking about.

A video to promote an audio-only podcast? That’s either demented or brilliant.

AHHHH! I couldn’t hear a thing the Producer was saying!

If you’re willing to talk about “other shit” then why do we need to send in any questions at all?

    Thor/superpowers: Yes, he has superpowers.

Dr. Strange: He’s got magical gizmos and doodads, but he also knows magic and I believe doesn’t require the gizmos and doodads.

Batman vs. Iron Man: I think you need to better define which Batman you’re talking about. The comic book version I recall reading had Bruce Wayne inventing all his gadgets himself.

Green Lantern: The shitty movie did NOT focus on the creativity of the ring. It focused on the guy playing him being an idiot. Also the lantern’s ring is the equivalent of Iron Man’s suit.

Does comic book hero “X” have super powers? I think everybody’s default answer without thinking about it is yes. It’s only when you sit down and analyze the heros like the geeks we are that you figure out if they really do or not.

Martian Manhunter: I would love to see a comic strip drawn in the style of a colonial era painting with Ben Franklin & George Washington debating Martian Manhunter.

Fox: He says whatever his writer tells him to.

    Boobs are beautiful, not scary.
