Something I said in the podcast came out all wrong, so I’ll just clarify here…
I’ve known a good number of police officers in my life, and *none* of them were the type of person who’d approve of profiling citizens based upon socioeconomic status or race or religion. Some cops are more influenced by the messed up culture of our criminal justice system than others, and the ones I’ve known seem to not be influenced by it much. One thing all of these officers had in common is that they all become police in order to help people, not “to stop bad guys” or “to put bad people in jail”. I’m of the opinion that this is true for most police officers, and I pretty-much assume this is true for every police officer I meet until said officer somehow proves otherwise. (And it’s been proved otherwise on maybe two occasions, but not with officers I’ve known personally.)
All of that said… this isn’t an “a few bad apples” defense of modern US policing. As Tony pointed out, there are some real problems in the US around proper police procedures, and they ought not to be swept under the rug by any justification.
And, as John Olliver recently pointed out, the full saying is “A few bad apples spoil the barrel.”
William’s right, I don’t feel any shame for that joke at all.
That’s because you don’t feel any shame, ever!
But I respect that. It’s largely how I live my life. 😉
Still horribly behind but the Cold War psychics question was from me, suspect I didn’t intend it to be anonymous when I wrote it. Unfortunately the game isn’t yet finished as my last playtest threw up some serious issues with setting the difficulties. I’m working on some edits but they’ve been sidelined somewhat by work. Current details and drafts can be found at http://www.projectcassandra.co.uk and I’ll be sure to forward a copy of the next version to you once I’ve worked out the issues.
