Episode 123 : Mystery Episode 11

A combination of heatwave and malfunctioning air conditioning has created a situation in which WE CANNOT RECORD TONIGHT. Luckily, we once again press our other-dimensional counterparts into service. So we don’t know what they said, or what questions were chosen. We just know that, once again, evil has saved the day. Enjoy!

    Suck-Fairy:

    … G-force.

    • Bloodsparrow says:

The last time I watched Buck Rodgers I was struck by two things.

      1. Buck was CLEARLY wearing a truss under that spandex suit.

      2. The scene I was watching was directly lifted and used in the episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Westly was applying to Starfleet Academy.

    • Bloodsparrow says:

So there’s this one episode of Sealab 2021 called “Bizzaro”.

The first time I watched this episode it was so not funny. It was the dumbest thing I had ever seen…

Then, a few days later, I and this other guy described the episode to people who hadn’t seen it… and it became the funniest thing EVAR…

And now all you have to do is say, “Bizzaro! Bizzaro! I’m helping! Bizzaro!” and I just loose it.

You know who wasn’t in Batman: the animated series?

      Me.

      I wasn’t.

I thought about the evil counterparts last weekend when I went to my new Pathfinder game. The GM’s son was there and he and I were having an animated conversation about his imaginary pet horse(he’s 4), when he also informed me that he has an imaginary friend who he named “Other Tyler” because he’s just like him only he’s the one that does that bad stuff that gets him in trouble. I couldn’t help myself, I had to ask him if he had a goatee and lived in another dimension. I don’t think a child has ever looked at me with such disdain. 🙂

Those first two questions were mine. Somehow it was a relief that there was another anonymous beside me for the last one.

I found the Suck Fairy article without having to venture into any untoward internet territory: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/09/the-suck-fairy.

I wrote that question because I had just had that experience with “V is for Vendetta” which I think got visited by a combination of the Message Fairy and changing times. When the movie was aimed at the Bush Administration (and the comic at the Thatcher Administration) I was pretty enthusiastic–though I still thought one of the messages of the story was supposed to be that V is a monster created by the circumstances he lives in. Seeing it again, I realize how much the movie romanticizes him and makes him heroic, especially in contrast to the comic, and that seems a dangerous message to me–especially with so many people using the same notion of “false flags” to fuel conspiracy theories, and also seeing that young men who commit acts of violence often see themselves as heroes saving the oppressed. My view also changed as a result of teaching the film and having all the students incapable of seeing that the movie presents a black/white version of the world and completely supportive of everything V does–including killing all the cops at the news station at the beginning and his imprisonment and torture of Evey later.

A series that I really liked from that whole Murder-She-Wrote, Columbo, etc. period was Remington Steele. I’ve seen that since and thought it held up well.

    • jas says:

Oh, and MASH holds up really well. I’m always so happy if there’s a bunch of back-to-back episodes on if I’m home sick.

  5. jas says:

Lillian Gish would have been awesome in Batman the Animated Series!

    • jas says:

If you haven’t seen Night of the Hunter I highly recommend it–though it’s very scary (and oddly has beautiful cinematography too). That was her last movie and she’s pretty much the hero. It’s the only movie I can think of off the top of my head that has an old woman as hero.

  6. jas says:

Apparently a signature phrase on Matt Houston (I’m not sure if this is the one CJ said or not) was “Better cock your pistols!”

  7. jas says:

I think I’d like to vacation with Dr, Who probably for the same reasons Tony mentioned for Star Trek.

The other place (probably on my mind from last week) is Puddleby with Dr. Doolittle. They always served great comfort food there (making toast on forks and drinking lots of tea!), and I could learn to talk to animals if I stayed long enough. If I were going on a Voyage I’d go to the The Secret Lake to meet the incredibly old and huge turtles.

  8. jas says:

The Batman movie “SubZero” is great. I love Michael Ansara as Mr. Freeze.

  9. Beth says:

Yes, I have seen American Dreamz. I actually own it. It is filed in my DVDs under “movies I am embarrassed to own” – also in that section are Bring It On (films 1-5) and The Wedding Date. All of these movies are so horrible that it makes them awesome in a way. They are best watched while playing drinking games. My friend and I went to see BrideWars in the theatre because we were expecting the same type of wonderful-because-it’s-terrible type movie, and were sorely disappointed. BrideWars was not good, but it wasn’t so bad that it was delightful to watch either.

I used to like Murder-She-Wrote, I was pretty young when I would watch it, but I do recall thinking Jessica Fletcher sure did have a lot of friends that turned out to be un-trustworthy. I also really liked this show (on PBS?) called Mathnet – which had a woman named Tuesday and she and her partner would investigate crimes and use math to solve them.

I wish you could IMDB commercial voice overs. So often I’ll think the voice sounds really familiar, but very rarely can I find evidence to authenticate my hunch.

    • jas says:

Mathnet was cool! I’m watching a mystery series now on PBS about Inspector Morse as a young man–called “Endeavor” cause that’s Morse’s first name. His boss’s last name is Thursday. I wonder how many tv shows named detectives after days of the week after Sgt. Friday on Dragnet?

  10. Beth says:

I googled Mathnet and it appears you can watch episodes on youtube! Also, appears I was mistaken- there was a detective Pat Tuesday AND a Kate Monday (only one at a time though, Monday was replaced by Tuesday). Thanks to wikipedia, I have learned this factoid about Mathnet: Mathnet was produced by Janette Webb, the widow of Dragnet producer and actor Jack Webb.

Good question on the Sgt. Friday homage. I haven’t actually seen Dragnet though. Has it held up?

    • jas says:

Thanks for the info on Mathnet! I love that all these shows are available. I actually haven’t watched Dragnet–I just know the guy’s name. 🙂

  11. Mark says:

On air blech: Shame, shame on you.

    Fixing the evil internet: Bah.

    Evil Producer: PIZZA!

Need food badly: I’m so glad that you’re the sort of people who all know where that phrase comes from and what it means. I’ve run into people who don’t know it and that makes me sad.

If The Magical Talking Hat is the one that pulls in auTony & auWilliam does that imply The Magical Talking Hat is evil?

auComics: Wouldn’t auComics be about the villains (e.g. Bizzaro Lex Luthor not Bizzaro Superman)?

Buck Rogers: Wow, William I guess you had a lower expectations for this show when you rewatched it than I did. I found it as least as bad as I was expecting. Also, Pamela Hensley was Princess Ardala.

    Battlestar Lollipop: Heh.

Murder She Wrote: Wow, there’s a character you never want to be friends with. I swear every episode one of her friends either dies or turns out to be a murderer.

Magnum PI: It holds up reasonable well for something of its era.

Rereading books: I tend to do this a lot. Usually because I’m reading a new book later in the same series and want to refresh my memory on what happened earlier in series.

Reminding Tony: Ya know, you could always pause the recording talk about whatever is and then resume recording….
