  1. Mark says:

So it the William from the Bashful universe the same as the William from the Nature universe?

Piers Anthony: The only correct I’d make to Tony’s comments is the Incarnations of Immortality series doesn’t hold up well but the earlier books, particularly On a Pale Horse, are still fun to read.

    Hello background Producer voice!

What would I do if I had no fear of being judged? Eh, I’m not sure or maybe I’m am sure and am too afraid of being judged to even talk about it.

Cosplay: Tony’s right, there’s definitely a niche for original character cosplay and some of the more interesting costumes out there are the originals.

Golden Girl: Never heard of this before, so I was flashing back to the old tv show and very confused when Tony started talking about it.

Soylent thing that should be a movie? Maybe Soylent: the Thing?

  2. Beth says:

William – you missed describing that you’re influenced by public opinion about wearing the same clothes two days in a row. Sounded like that one is so ingrained that you missed it in your self analysis.

University of Iowa Golden Girl – she is a baton twirler. UI has one of two (or three?) full ride college scholarships for twirlers, thus, our Golden Girl is usually a national and international champion. The process to become the Golden Girl begins with an audition video, and university application. Then a few finalists (usually 3) are selected to come to campus for an in-person audition and interview, usually in late February. The process only occurs when the current Golden Girl is ready to graduate – the past 3 have twirled for 5 seasons having begun a graduate degree before they retire.

The “male equivalent” I think you’re talking about is the Drum Major. The UI Drum Major is a student who has been in the band, and auditions (with a mace twirling performance) when the band is in need of a new Drum Major. While UI has only had male Drum Majors so far, it is not a gender specific position. Once selected as the Drum Major, the person attends drum major camp during the summer before the season starts where they learn some conducting, leadership techniques, and mace twirling.

William – Herky is no longer limited to be portrayed by members of a specific fraternity. While Herky himself is a boy, the person portraying him can be either male or female. In college, I knew a guy who auditioned as drum major, didn’t get it, then auditioned as Herky and did.

Tony – I assume you thought I had stopped listening, otherwise you would have assumed on the podcast that I could answer nearly any UI question you could pose.

    • William says:

Re: the same clothes two days in a row… yeah, that’s a good one, I did totally overlook that…

Re: Herky… thanks for the update on that! I was in high school when someone told me that a specific fraternity did Herky, but I never verified the claim, so, actually, I have no idea if it was ever true.

      • Beth says:

William – I think it used to be true, and was made open to anyone in the late ’90s or early ’00s.

Tony – I agree with your boss, Drum Major isn’t really equivalent to the Golden Girl, but they’re often paired together. Like salt is not equivalent to pepper, but they’re often a set.
