Honestly, I can’t be arsed to remember what we talked about. We didn’t get to any questions. Whatever. It’s my birthday! Count yourself luck to get a podcast episode. Enjoy!

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday deeeeeeeeeear Tony,
Happy birthday to you.
I was enjoying some of the same events on the 21st and it wasn’t even my birthday!
*applause*
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday Tony!
William, good tidbit about your birthday being Mardi Gras this year.
My cousin, Anna, was born on January 28. Tony asked.
My birthday is also sometimes on the Chinese New Year. In fact, the evening I was born was the new moon evening before the Chinese New Year in 1969. So my brother, Scott, and I were born a year and two days apart, but we share the same Chinese zodiac sign.
Happy belated birthday Tony!
A point of order though – Cortex is most definitely not a d20 inspired system. Nothing like it and the d20 is the only standard die it doesn’t use. I’m a little jealous that you’re getting to play it William, it’s one of my favourite systems and I’ve yet to get a chance to play Prime. Do you know which of the mods your GM is using?
I do not. But Dave of Id is a listener, so maybe he can chime in?
It’s been very fun, that’s for sure.
I knew when I said it that it was going to get me into trouble.
The comment came from a place that, in my memory, the version of Cortex I saw in the Firefly game I had used the various dice for levels in your various attributes.
Upon consideration, and a bit of research I should amend:
1. That’s not how the Cortex Prime system works. There are a LOT of variants out there with “cortex” attached to their name.
2. That’s not how d20 works, either.
Having looked up Cortex Prime, I’m rather excited to get hold of it and try it out. My overview makes me think of the things I liked about FATE, and not the things I didn’t like about FATE. Shades of the old FUDGE style, really. 🙂
Yeah the original Serneity was the first version to use the name Cortex for the system though I think it lifted a lot of mechanics from Sovereign Stone. Then came Demon Hunters, Battlestar Galatica, Supernatural, Leverage, Smallville, Marvel Heroic and Firefly (distinct from the original Serentiy). Prime is the most recent iteration and they’ve got a number of IPs lined up for it including one in the He-man seeting
I might have a spare code for the digital/PDF version of Cortex Prime if you would like it?
I very much appreciate the offer. But I want to support the work, and I can afford it. I’m just gonna buy a copy myself. 🙂
By the way… back in 2016, there was a podcast episode on Tony’s birthday, though unlike this episode, we pre-recorded it. So this is the only podcast so far that we’ve recorded on his actual birthday.
The title of that episode is also “Happy Birthday”, except it has an exclamation point at the end. Which, I think, still makes this podcast the only one so far that has had the same title as a previous episode, though I couldn’t swear to that.
Eventually, we’re going to have our own version of “Simpsons Did It.”
I’m mostly just looking forward to the episode where we recycle the title “Vomit Goblins!”
That was episode 32, by the way. We really did peak early.
Still my favorite title. If I can manage it, we will *totally* reuse that one. 🙂
