This week we discuss some truly impressive films, for a variety of different reasons, including a film that hasn’t come out yet. Also, a bit of nerd pedantry, a discussion of our terrible educational choices, and a brief trip down Memory Lane that’s pretty much just for us. Enjoy!

I recently discovered that “Maid Marian and Her Merry Men” written by Tony Robinson (Baldrick on “Black Adder”)is available on YouTube. Here’s a brief description: Maid Marian is the fearless and cunning leader of the outlaws; Robin is a handsome and cowardly dolt that mistakenly gets taken for the leader by Prince John and the Sheriff; the other members of the band include the vertically challenged Little Ron, a Rastafarian named Barrington, and the aptly named Rabies; and, it’s a children’s show!
It started in 1989 and ran for 4 series. Tony Robinson also plays the Sheriff, and the whole thing is very Black Adder-like, except less sexual innuendo and more gross-out humor, because, it’s a children’s show! (They start kids on this whole satire thing early in the UK.)

“Make way for the royal underpants!”
There were moments when I could have sworn that Marian was being played by Jas instead of Kate Lonergan…
๐ Episode 2 in which Marian tries to coach the men in archery and woodcraft…that could definitely be me talking to my class…
” ‘Hooray?’ Is that all you can say? We’re SUPPOSED to be fanatical revolutionaries!”
(That’s a good ep. generally–has the archery contest.)
I couldn’t remember in which episode’s forum posts that bell hooks name came up before but saw this quotation of hers today that I thought would be worth posting:
โThe first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem.โ
