Episode 254 : Happy Birthday!

No, this is not an episode about things Frosty the Snowman says. It’s Tony’s birthday today! And he’s spending it with you. Congrats! Also, William is way into Teen Titans. Enjoy!

Yeah, I’m only up to season 2 of Clone Wars, but it extends some of the concepts started with the Republic Commando EU novels (which are superb, and go beyond Order 66 and the formation of the 501st Legion). I think it’s a really interesting point of view, that the Jedi don’t necessarily know what their doing (but, as Generals, order these Clones to their death), that the Jedi treat the Clones as tools, rather than people (and there’s some of that at the start of Episode III, where Kenobi tells Anakin not to help the clones when in trouble, as they’re just doing their job… and shortly die). It’s actually well written too, Karen Traviss did some stuff for Halo and Gears of War.

Oh my word, WATCH BLACK ADDER. Amazing satire of the first world war in season 4. Just to spoil one thing, in order to convey the satire, the captain to the general shows him a piece of land (like actual turf), as a model of the land they’ve captured. It’s about 2 feet long. The general asks what the scale is, and the captain says “one to one sir… look, there’s even a little worm.” And the general seems quite content. Hilarious, but when you think about it, representing a sad truth. Honestly, watch this series. 1 was a bit odd, but 2, 3, and 4 were absolutely must-watch British comedy.

Ditto what Stuart says about Black Adder. That last episode is one of the best anti-war statements ever. I was just thinking about the show generally ’cause I might show the episode about Samuel Johnson in class this semester. That and the Shakespeare one about “Bob” are my favs!

        Sausage? SAUSAGE?

I love that episode with Dr Johnson (S3, Ink and Incapability). Was watching some show a while back and a question came up about the dictionary or something, and I knew the answer because of that episode!

And yes, final episode of S4 was brilliantly poignant. I hope the rumour of another season, some 20 odd years later, turns out to be false – that message was the perfect way to end it.

But do you recall the Christmas Special? 🙂

            Well, one-offs aside 🙂

I’m not sure what they’d do it on, these days. The 2nd and 3rd series covered Elizabeth I and the Regency era respectively, but it was amusing from a “yeah, I vaguely know of this stuff from history lessons.” It was actually the 4th series about WW1 that you could empathize with (if you’re of a certain age – I would posit that, to youngsters now, war is just Call of Duty and reports of drone strikes on the TV).

What themes could they cover now? Wealth inequality? It’s like they’re running out of history to cover, kinda like Downton Abbey.

I can’t reply to Stu’s last message.. it will only let you drill down so far on comments.

But I have two words for you, Stu: Margaret. Thatcher.

Thinking about it, that might work pretty well. The whole yuppie, neo liberalism thing taking off in the 80s. It would be a satire on the modern wealth divide (and aspirations thereof) without even needing to mention the 1% thing. And as ever, we’ll smile and nod, knowingly. Kinda like watching re-runs of Yes, Prime Minster, which has all the same issues in the Commons now, 30 years on.

Showed parts of Ink and Incapability yesterday. None of my students had ever heard of Black Adder. Now they all want to know how to get hold of more episodes.

    Mwhahahahahaha!

Congratulations on having the gumption to survive yet another year (and then some)!

Just remember 39 is the new 29. 😉

Ezzie moment/Get down: For a split second, I was thinking Tony was having some sort of Motown-moment, just getting on down with his own bad self.

Blue suckers: My first thought was a bad joke about Smurf porn, but then Tony explained and I felt bad about making that joke in my head.

Playing in Public: Hopefully you’re planning on coming this weekend; as the stars (and our schedules) have finally aligned to allow us to attend Saturday.

Clone Wars: I don’t recall ever seeing those but have heard great things about them. I’ve seen a bit of the newer/regular show and it’s ok. Except Anakin is basically Beast Boy.

    Mass Effect: FTW!

For other space opera sci-fi, I really like the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Though it’s much more heavily militaristic than Star Wars. Many of my friends will reccomend Miles Vorkosigan by Lois McMaster Bujold.

What we do in the Shadows: That sounds most entertaining.

Mockumentries: Sounds like there are a lot more of these than I was familiar with. I’ll have to see if some of these you mention are on Netflix.

    The First Flight Sim: Bwahahahaha!

Fallout 4: I’m currently replying this but going around working with the companions a lot more and have really enjoyed having Piper around (though I think I liked Nick better).

Black Adder: I’ve only seen little bits and pieces on occasion, but I do really enjoy Rowan Atkinson. This is probably my favorite bit he did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppVpdsClN80

Fallout 4 Companions: Did you know your companions can use Power Armor without a Fusion Core? While playing recently I (finally) figured out how to get Piper into a suit of Power Armor and only realized afterwards that she didn’t have a core in her inventory and there wasn’t one in the armor either.
