Happy Thanksgiving! We are so thankful for all our hatlings and hardhats! We discuss the holiday, the pie, our plans, and the terribly corrupt government in Illinois. Enjoy!

What is your favorite Asimov novel? –Anonymous

Here’s the video we watched between episodes.

The “under god” part of the pledge, I’m pretty sure, was added in the ’50s and was part of the whole anti-godless-communism stuff.
Yeah, re: the refugee crisis–see comments from last week. An unfortunately good example of what I mean by harmful story-telling. And more evidence of the harm this week. 🙁
Awesome charity: Your local animal shelter.
Ditto animal shelters.
There’s a battered women’s shelter here in Boston: Rosie’s Place. Must be similar in that area.
Another good video to think about donating to elementary schools is “That’s a Family.” When my son was in elementary school, my PTO group did a project centered around the video–the kids wrote stories about and drew pictures of their families and then there was a movie night to watch and discuss the video.
Weather did keep us from driving home this year, it turns out.

I think all of the Asimov novels together that are supposed to share continuity (Foundation, Empire, and Robot) number 16.
Tony, I know I’m a bit late, but you can always check out “charity navigator” as a one stop shop to see ratings of charities by name, by cause, by amount of your dollar that goes to fundraising/overhead.
Another late suggestion for a charity but The Gambia Horse & Donkey Trust (GHDT) does a lot of good work providing veterinary services and care advice for working animals in The Gambia. It’s a charity that I’m particularly supportive of as they were kind enough to let me work as part of their field team while I was doing my PhD.
First since nobody else said it on the blog; “The cake is a lie!”
Listens on Thanksgiving/Thursday: Yeah, no. 🙂
FDR’s Weird Shit: Huh, I didn’t know that.
William’s Thanksgiving Plans: You never know where you’re going? How odd. I suppose it’s greatly simplified for me. My family’s too scattered so we don’t get together for the holidays anymore; so we always go to my in-laws.
Too Many Pies: This phrase don’t make sense me either. A pie person, half a pie for kids (especially for pumpkin pies) sounds right to me.
Jesus Cake: BWAHAHAHAHA!
You guys really need to get the Producer to come into the recording area with you; so we can hear her better. Either that or give her a microphone of her own where she’s sitting.
Rejecting Syrian refugees: Our governor is a flippin’ idiot. Also given how “Christian” many of the politicians who were making these sorts of statements claim to be; you’d think they’d all be familiar with the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Receiving Gifts vs. donating to charity: Yeah, I’ve been thinking of suggesting this to my circle of friends that we generally exchange gifts with.
“The cake is a lie!”: Thank you William!
Last Foundation Novel: Actually, it was Forward the Foundation (1992).
Nightfall: You liked the book better than short? Odd, I found the reverse to be true.
Heinlein: Yup, he’s my favorite of the classic Sci-Fi authors but he’s got massive issues.
Foundation Series: I recall enjoying this quite a bit back in high-school but haven’t gone back to it since. Maybe I should add it to my reading list for this year.
Tech based on Sci-Fi: Star Trek communicators were the first flip phones. 🙂
