Gravity Falls is super worth your time and it’s complete. It’s not a spin off of Steven Universe. Steven Universe is really good and deep but I’ve lost the thread after a couple seasons. I think they all get lumped together due to the simplistic so-called CalArts animation. Over the Garden Wall is also on my favorites list and it is a complete limited run series.

I think the first episodes of Steven Universe that I saw were ones that had to do with the overarching narrative and those episodes do tend to be more serious. Other episodes are sometimes lighter and/or goofier, but I like goofy 🙂 Also goofiness doesn’t come across to me as childish. In contrast, for me, Teen Titans, Go! comes across as childish and I’ve never been able to make it through an episode.

That said, some of the beginning episodes are more on the light/goofy side, and also the drawing is a bit more simplistic than it got to be later. You could skip some of those if you wanted and not really miss anything in continuity. One place you could start if you didn’t want to start just at S1 Ep1 is Episode 9 “Tiger Millionaire” which is still one of the light ones but introduces some of the interesting stuff about gender.

To me the show isn’t just representing LGBT characters, but is really digging into questions about gender and identity. It also has very strong themes about consent. One of my former students wrote a really good article about why its an important show, for adults as well as kids. https://www.theodysseyonline.com/steven-universe-crucial-lgbtqa-community

The Good Place is currently playing on NBC in Season Three. It’s great! I’ve really enjoyed it–but the problem is that after binge watching the first two seasons, I have to wait for one a week now.

I also really loved Over the Garden Wall.

Oh, Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe, wrote for Adventure Time for several of the first seasons. I haven’t watched all of Adventure Time, but did see the ending and thought they did a great job of wrapping it up.
