Episode 251 : Happy Old Year!

It’s the end of the year as we know it, people! We rehash stuff from 2015. And some stuff from older than that. Like Lost. But it’s mostly about storytelling and character, so hear us out. Also, Tony reviews a movie that he hasn’t seen yet, at the time of recording, but has seen by the time you hear this. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

How important is a likeable main character to you when it comes to TV shows?                  –Anonymous

Yup, I should definitely have a t-shirt that reads:

I watched LOST for 6 years, and all I got out of it
    was THIS STUPID PODCAST!!

    😉

I have to admit my love/hate relationship with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. There are some great treatments in the comics/graphic novels. I remember seeing the film and not liking it mostly because of the changed from the source material. I also remember seeing the film years later and enjoying it for what it was as an action film, separate from the source material. I still go back and forth on it. To sum up a bit… the Igor character in the original film was actually named Fritz.

I don’t think it’s clear as to whether or not “Fritz” was in the play.

This game is more weighed down by “reanimated corpse” stuff than Tony’s description implied, but truly artificial creatures more like what Mary Shelley envisioned are part of the game, and overall it does sound very interesting to me, so long as the reanimated corpse stuff is excluded.

Only December 17th? December 17th is never an “only”; it’s the most magical day of the year!

Endothermic: I was hoping you’d go for explosive servants and now feel very disappointed.

2014 sucked so damn hard! 2015 was better, but not as nice as I would’ve liked.

Reading habits: Do either of you use any services (e.g. GoodReads) to keep track of what you read?

Tony’s Sound Levels: Wow, you’re sound level are just all over the place. At the moment, you’re talking about an old RPG you bought, but you sounded like you were talking from another room. Then you started talking about sorcerers and suddenly you’re back and now you’re gone again.

Speaking of RPGs: I might have mentioned how awesome a time I had playing Dread back at the last ICON; well I’ve started setting up a session to GM it with some co-workers/friends who don’t play RPGs much.

The Force Awakens and lines for a film: We didn’t but we did see them. We happened to walk into the theater at exactly the right time to buy tickets and ended up walking straight into the movie. We sat further down in front than I generally like but it was fine.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: I had a great time watching it, but I don’t recall ever thinking of it as a good film.

    Jedi Alzheimer’s: HA! 🙂

Likable main character: Not very, but there does have to be a character on the show that I’m interested in some manner. Be that sympathetic towards them or maybe even hating them and wanting to see them get their comeuppance.

47 Ronin: Was surprising less awful than I was expecting.

Steven Moffat should retire from Dr. Who? Funny you mention that….

Sense8: That’s an odd show. I’ve watched a few episodes, but it’s a bit too dark for me to binge on it.
