Episode 131 : Touching Smells

A lot on our plate tonight, folks. Most of it is TV. William goes into great detail about how great a show that he does not like is. Tony talks about movies, because he’s a rebel like that. We get a behind the scenes look at the world of Azuretalon. And a lot of talk about synesthesia. Enjoy!

QUESTIONS:

I haven’t seen tons of movies to get excited about this Fall. The one exception is “The Punk Singer” (documentary on Kathleen Hanna) that is getting a theatrical release at the beginning of December. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuhtI_Kgn3E

  2. jas says:

Heard a radiolab the other day in which they were talking about the brains of babies. Apparently we all experience synesthesia as newborns, and then we lose it as the brain develops and all the wiring gets established. So Tony just needs to get in touch with his inner 2 month old or get unplugged or something 🙂

And then there’s the kiki-booba experiment that shows that we’re still all synesthetes to some degree.

  3. jas says:

That is great news about Azuretalon. I’d love to hear about the new treatment as I have a couple friends getting treatment for brain cancer. Maybe they’ve heard of it already, but it doesn’t hurt to pass on the info.

What’s the game show that always had the doors?

    What went through my head:

No one gets out of here alive?

Break on through to the other side?
(A kind of obstacle course style live-action game)

    Light My Fire?
(In which contestants are placed in various adverse conditions, like pouring rain, or with few or no tools, and asked to go a bit pyro.)

  5. jas says:

Touching smells–Thinking of smells as these little creatures (fragrant, spicy, aromatic, malodorous, noxious and noisome) with fat little paws reaching out and patting something.

  6. Bloodsparrow says:

    Riddick –

Better than the last one, not as good as Pitch Black. It had its moments.

These characters on this planet are all very similar people to eachother as opposed to Pitch Black, which were all really quite different from eachother and that was part of how you got to know them all.

In regards of the Token lady… HER NAME IS DOLL!

    *grumble*

Also, the ending is kind of lame. Particularly compared to the ending of Pitch Black.

The Worlds End – Yes. Is good.

  7. Azuretalon says:

Thanks to Tony for visiting and all the support from the Hardhats! Jas, feel free to get in touch with me, but I doubt it’s anything new to them. It’s old stuff for other brain cancers that they are applying to CNS Lymphoma now is all.

  8. Mark says:

Audio: Tony’s crazy quiet compared to William this time.

Viewers: I remember seeing The Magical Talking Hat once…. just once…. and then I got better.

Hemlock Grove: Meh. I’ve not watched it and nothing I’ve seen or heard about it from you lot or from Netflix encourages me to do so.

Broken DVR: Ha, ha. Welcome back to my (DVR-less) world.

Fall TV: The only new thing that I’m interested in is Agents of Shield. I won’t saw more here as I suspect you’ll talk about the new shows in a later episode after they aired.

Almost Human: Wow that sounds interesting, though unfortunately it appears it’s a FOX show; so it’s probably already canceled.

Riddick: Pitch Black was decent enough. The Chronicles of Riddick is terrible but is terrible fun. The new Riddick movie appears to be trying to ignore the Chronicles of Riddick and going back to Pitch Black but from the trailers it doesn’t appear to work.

    Azure Talon: Holy Crap.

Gravity: The story sounds extremely thin, but the trailers look gorgeous.

47 Ronin: It looks like it could be fun, but 1) Keanu Reeves, and 2) this is a complete rewrite of a classic Japanese samurai drama, adding in fantasy elements; so I doubt I’m going to see it.

TV Game Show names: Does that mean Win, Lose or Draw is the worst game show name?

Netflix Originals: Not really just having entire series of a given TV show available for instant streaming has changed the way we watch TV. In the olden days, there was no way to binge watch all of a given TV show. Adding original programming is just sweetening the pot to entice viewers into doing their TV watching via Netflix.

DVR: I don’t have one, though I kind of look forward to the day when I do (holding out to upgrade my TV first).

Adverts in/on TV: If Netflix starts forcing me to watch adverts; then I’ll probably drop my subscription and just start watching the stuff for free from the various TV networks individual networks. And DVR users still get adverts; they’re just built into the shows (e.g. product placement). Tony’s comment about the DVRs buttons not working while ads are playing; that’s a reason to buy your own DVR rather than using whatever comes from your cable company.
