This recording was found on a cassette tape, deep in the woods of New England, with a note taped to it that simply said, “Pepperidge Farm remembers…” Enjoy!

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the NSA rebrands itself as Pepperidge Farms after this broadcast (because you know someone from there was listening :)).

I was just reading an article called “The Science of Why We Don’t Believe Science” which addressed some of the reasons why people listen to media that supports their own views. It’s pretty much a version of what Tony was saying about comfort. Evolutionarily our first response is to reject information that we find threatening to our world view and embrace information that supports it. And when we already feel strongly about an issue–the tendency is more pronounced.

About the media and the NSA–I’m not sure when the question was asked but the NSA story is being talked about now quite a bit. And I’m not sure that the story ever was quite not being covered because the powers that be in government were directing the media not to cover them, or the media was not covering the story because they feared their sources would go away if they did. If media and government were in agreement to that extent you wouldn’t have the great misinformation about the current administration out there. Just today I read that the majority of Republicans in Louisiana put more blame on Obama for the Hurricane Katrina response than they do on Bush. And there’s the ongoing, birther, homosexual background, Kenyan, Muslim, etc. BS about Obama.

One thing that is going on in media coverage is stuff like Bill O’Reilly criticizing the NSA program at the same time that he praises the stop and frisk program in NY–that is, it’s OK to have the “bad guy’s” rights taken away, but not us, the good guys. And then that kind of story about the bad guys is also used in all those conspiracy theories in which media&government (or whoever you’re appointed bad-guys are) are a big monolithic force feeding you, the media-consumer, misinformation, and the only one you can rely on to give you the straight dope (so to speak) is the friendly folks at “fill-in-the-blank” news. That story fosters a dependency on those media outlets and on the politicians that mouth the same fear-mongering tactics such that people either give-up and feel helpless and angry, or think that the only line of action left is some kind of armed vigilantism.

Why do I believe TMTH is better than the Nerdist podcast? Y’all speak in a much more comfortable manner, whereas the Nerdist speakers seem to be on Red Bull + coffee or on cocaine/meth and I need to slow down the playback. Thanks for not being spazzes on the air. 🙂 Ciao!

Does anybody else find it disturbing that TMTH is more popular in the alternate universe?

Mary Poppins: Have you ever read the original books? Disney did a lot of work to make her into a happy/nice person….

Prism: Have you seen the GetPrsm social network?

No questions: Or maybe it means we’re waiting to send questions once we’ve gotten caught back up on listening?

auTony: Are you basically saying the Pepperridge Farms guy is like the godfather or what?

Podcast Listening Devices/Apps: I listen to many podcasts. I use my cellphone (a Samsung Galaxy Nexus). The app I use is BeyondPod and I’ve been using it long enough that I also use the Presto Audio plugin to allow me to adjust the playback speed (most podcasts I listen to at 2x).
