Episode 73 : The Dark Hat Rises

We have a lot to talk about this episode. Mostly, we have an in-depth (SPOILER-FREE) discussion of The Dark Knight Rises. We also talk a lot about William’s books, and a little about Mass Effect 3 (again, no spoilers).

Don’t worry. We do manage to fit a question in. At the end.

I have no feeling either way about the two parter thing or the porn conversation.

I was mildly entertained by the two-part thing. Though I listened to the first episode on Wednesday and the second episode on Friday, so perhaps my frustration was not equal to that of other people.

I actually appreciated the intellectual level of discussion about the porn. Much more thought provoking and much less crass than I would have expected.

I think people probably do tend to revert to the child they were within the family when put back into family scenarios. Probably because they’re used to acting a certain way around these people, so they expect certain types of behavior out of you. This may just be how people segregate themselves and their emotions into groups, i.e. you have different behavior norms and topics of conversation when hanging out with your LARP friends, vs. Derby friends, vs. your family vs. coworkers. You’re still you, you just choose to expose different parts of your personality to different people. You’re still you, but you compartmentalize some parts of yourself in order to gain the acceptance of a specific peer group. In the family sense, you’ve already gained their acceptance by serving a specific role within the family group, which is likely why we each revert to that role when seeing family. We want to continue to be accepted and we do not want to redefine group roles for each interaction.

    Just my two cents.

The porn topic wasn’t too bad/annoying to me. It just wasn’t something I felt commenting on given that I usually listen/write down my comments while I’m at work.

I feel totally unqualified to really comment on the family relations topic. When I was a kid we lived far enough away from the majority of my extended family that I didn’t get to know them very well. Later we moved closer, but by that point the majority knew each other so well that I’ve always felt like an outsider when I’m around them. Though regarding my immediate family, I get along with them (specificly my older brother) better now than anytime when we were growing up together.

I somehow think the Producer will be doing better in the future at not displaying interest in Tony’s life.

Does it really matter what the color imaginary people’s skin is? I can see it mattering maybe when a story changes media (e.g. ook to film/tv) and the new media changes the skin tone. Otherwise it seems to me that it doesn’t matter all that much.

Why on earth would you buy a book written by Phillip K. Dick? True, he’s got some interesting ideas buried under all the crap that he writes. But mostly his books are utter crap/drug-trips.

Tony: Do you use GoodReads to track the books you read?

    AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH! More video game talk!

Good lord, Tony you sounded like Jar-Jar Binks when you said that “might-gonna-be-happen” shit.

I’m glad to hear Hathaway’s performance was good, though sorry to hear that her character was effectively pointless to the film. Though I don’t know how much it really matters as I don’t have any real plans to see the film.
