Episode 37 : Thankful for Hats

Yes, it’s our first ever Thanksgiving episode, and we have a lot to be thankful for.  Citizenship, comedy, and something Sir Guido said (I already forget what).  And meat.  Lots of meat.  Also, William talks at length about… something…

I don’t recall any links, but there’s probably some in there.  Somebody tell me what they were, and I’ll post them.  Cuz we’re a family, and family’s help each other out!

  1. William says:

    Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

  2. Bloodsparrow says:

    Happy Foodmas!

I don’t say things should go on a t-shirt, I say things are the name of bands that will be playing the Gobi Stage at the Cochella Music Festival or… Well, now that I live just outside of Austin I say SXSW. (Which is a huge music and media festival here.)

I’ve heard good things about the new Muppet movie actually. But it’ll never be as good as THE Muppet Movie… I didn’t know Frank Oz, and others, wasn’t in on it… That’s… that’s… huh.

It was very sad when he passed. I remember the tribute special they did was so funny and wonderful. The Muppets didn’t know who he was, but his name was on their paychecks so they decided he must have been the accountant. So they created this huge tribute number that involved flying in a giant W2 form and I stopped crying and started laughing my ass off.

I don’t think Tony can resist the Kraft Dinner. I also don’t think he really cares about the $10, I think he would have gone with just the one Kraft Dinner.

I haven’t served in the military, but I did do a year of service with the Americorps program, which is like the Peace Corps but domestic.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to call you surely.” Okay… THAT does need to be on a T-Shirt.

I’m no longer a solid Californian, I’m a viscous Texan. (Actually, I think I’m still a Californian. I’ve met more people who are also from California and other states then people who are actually from here.)

I have a friend, who’s ancestors founded a town called “Revenge, Ohio”.

I’m trying to find open mics here to do comedy at people, but I haven’t had a lot of free time to explore venues. Though I’m still working on material. There’s some footage of me on YouTube in the early days of Matt Myra’s Day Off at Meltdown but you’ll have to find it yourself.

Abbot and Costello are awesome, a friend and I used to occasionally do their skits as scenes in Drama class in High School. “Who’s On First” and “Hertz, U Drive” were particularly successful… I’ve never scene Strange Brew either, I knew it was based on Hamlet because of “Shakespeare horked our script, ay”. (I also used to watch “Hee Haw”, but I can’t for the life of me remember anything that was said on that show other then “Hee Haw” and “Hooooooooudy!”) Because today is Thanksgiving, I was reminded of WKRP in Cincinnati and the gut busting “Turkeys Away” episode. I have an unholy love for Archer. (How you say, “Wah wah”?) I agree with the point of playing satire straight. Some of the best comedy I’ve seen and done happens when the people perform it just commit fully to the premise and trust the audience to be able to find the comedy in it. I think that’s one reason Bill Murry can still pull off a lot of the same schtick from early in his carrier, we always completely inhabited that kind of, persona as if that’s just how he was. Don’t get me wrong, I love and respect Chevy Chase, but I don’t think he quite had that until more recently… Or maybe I’m just talking through my hat. (Which I knit myself.)

    I’m not saying I can’t do adorable anime girl voice, I’m saying I WON’T.

  3. Mark says:

Hope everybody enjoyed their tofurkey day!

    Hmm, pie.

Football? Bah! When we go to the relatives for Thanksgiving; I generally grab the remote at the first opportunity and switch the TV over to the Discovery channel for the annual Mythbusters marathon. Though this year was a great disappointment; as Discovery didn’t do that this year.

Farscape: Jim Henson Productions & Jim Henson Television both have production credits for the show and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has a special effects credit. Also it was a vaguely interesting show, but not very good. Ben Browder sucked in it and many of the aliens were too Muppet-like.

To be fair William, Disney’s lawyers are known for being hard-asses and I doubt you’d be able to get them to part with more than $10 either. Though I’d wager you could do better than a single box of Kraft dinner from the Kraft corporation.

Tony: The question was inspired by Starship Troopers and episode 31. Next time I send a question inspired by something in a current episode, I’ll make sure to note it in the question. Also I’m not sure exactly what TMTH spit out but I’m not sure my question got digested/regurgitated correctly. Originally, it was two separate (but related) questions:
    A) Is the USA govt as screwed up as it is because the only requirement to be a US citizen is to be born on US soil?
    B) Would the US govt be in better shape if we required a certain minimum amount of military service in order to be a full, voting citizen?

It’s not that people who choose not to go into the military are morons or plebes. It’s that those people haven’t demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the great good and if you’re not willing to do that, why should you be allowed to make decisions affecting all citizens? So it’s kind of both commitedness and stake-holding.

William: The 1% generally are at the top of the economic food chain. The total income of those in the 1% may not be more than the total income of those in the 99%; but the dense concentration of how much of the nation’s income they take home (24%) amongst such a small number of people (1% of the US population) combined with the positions of power they hold in the US (CEOs of major corporations, politicians, etc) makes it easy for them to control things. Part of the Occupy movement is the 99% working together to figure out how to work around the 1% like you’re suggesting people should be doing.

If you want to examine this idea more, then here’s an explanation of how I view this concept from Starship Troopers:
    * Everybody born in the country would still be a citizen of that country.
** Not all citizens would have the right to vote.
** Only citizens who honorably complete a single term of military service would receive the right to vote.
** Military enlistment is 100% voluntary (no conscription).
** I hadn’t thought about being able to run for office with/without having served in the military but I guess that makes sense too.
*** Voting rights would be the only thing specifically restricted to military (active/retired) personnel.
*** Non-military citizens would still have all the rights/benefits/etc US citizens have today (excluding the sole right to vote).
    * The idea behind requiring military service to order to obtain the right to vote is social responsibility requires people to be wiling to make individual sacrifice.
** By completing a term of volunteer military service, you demonstrate to society that you can make decisions requiring that individual sacrifice for the greater good.

    Bless you to the Producer!

Tony’s right: Sir Guido is both a sad human being and a geek god.

George Carlin was good, as is Dennis Leary. Never was much a fan of Eddy Murphy.

Tony: Strange Brew is available on Netflix (instant streaming even!). Being “way into” Golden Girls is …. extremely disturbing and the more you talk about some project being based on it is even worse.

Archer isn’t just offensive; it’s down right vulgar. The shit they say/do on that show is wicked bad. That being said it’s the funniest animated show I’ve seen in years.

Vampiric podcast? That explains the slurping noise I’ve been hearing. Also, you can view the Buffy vs. Twilight image Tony mentioned here.

Also while Tony might want a Sad Keanu meme image for TMTH the owners the original photo that it is based on are known to send out DMCA notices over it. So maybe posting these isn’t a good idea…

William wouldn’t eat a turkey leg. It was totally Ezzie who took it.
